Peachtree's first release, If I Found a Wistful Unicorn: A Gift of Love (1978) by Ann Ashford, illus. by Bill Drath, extends a plethora of thoughtful propositions ("If I found a wistful unicorn and/ brought him to you, all forlorn.../ Would you pet him?") coupled with breezy watercolors. This hand-size volume is just right for presenting to someone special. (Sept.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
Ann Ashford begins her book by asking, "If I found a wistful unicorn and brought him to you, all forlorn... Would you pet him?" Page after page, the book provides more stanzas of the poem and more questions. What would you do if I did this? The unasked but always implied question is, "Would you still love me if..." The reader proceeds through situation after situation, being asked to respond. At the end of the book, the narrator reveals the real question, after which readers can look back through the pages and see how many different ways we have been asked. The beautifully illustrated poems in the book remind the reader of the need for unconditional love and the support that comes with that love. The simple but elegant illustrations focus on the situation rather than the character. The prevailing earth tones give the book a warm, open feel. Throughout the poem, the young child helps the animals and the reader is asked to help in a series of warmly nostalgic pictures. The end of the book reveals that the child provides the love to the older character now pictured with him, which suggests that the child is capable of giving this unconditional love as well as desiring it for himself. The child is not begging the reader for love but rather the reader begs the child. 2002 (orig. 1978), Peachtree Publishers,
