Overview

"Venison recipes, food trivia & musings of a Carolina hunter & cook."

Venison. The other red meat.

"Truly to appreciate a habitat, you must taste it".

That statement by naturalist Adrian Forsyth is a mouthful. North or South, East or West, no matter where you travel or live, you'll appreciate that place more by eating what is native to it.

Nearly a quarter million deer are harvested by hunters each year in South Carolina. And the Lowcountry has the longest deer season in the U.S. "August to January, shoot all you want, no limit".

Maybe you're interested in Southern cooking, or regional "foodways", or "slow food", or even in the pan-global kitchen.

Or maybe you're looking for the venison cookbook that calls for an envelope of Lipton's dried French Onion Soup, or a can of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom. If so, this is not it. Here you'll find scratch cooking with fresh ingredients.

Lots of these recipes are quick and easy to make. Still others have a few more steps for the hunter who loves to cook. But even the "slow" recipes are guaranteed to be worth the wait!

Not a real hunter and it shows???

After trying to read this very poor book one must woner if Dick has even shot a deer? If he is trying to be like Uncle Ted or Cousin Rick Black he is NOT. Do yourself a favor and buy the 2 best venison books in the world: Kill It and Grill It by Ted Nugent and Deer Burger Cookbook by Cousin Rick Black.

Venison cookbook from SC, where deer season runs Auguest to January!

Southeast regional venison cookery and beyond. This little book will appeal to the hunter, the down home cook and even the cooking sophisticate. Great collection of venison recipes organized by "slow cooked", "fast cooked", "ground venison", "venison sausages", "venison soups", etc. Also includes recipes for fall season "vegetable side dishes, salads, and desserts". Many recipes accompanied by fascinating story line introductions. The author's cooking is influenced by the hunting life in and around Charleston, SC where deer season runs from Aug. 15-Jan. 1 every year. Book also includes an international recipe section with many classic red meat recipes adapted to use of venison. The book is nicely finished by the author's whimsical illustrations on the cover, contents pages and throughout the book itself. Also includes a nice diagram and guide to the use of various cuts of venison. A lot of good usable content for the price. Would also be a nice gift for the hunter or cook.
