Deanne doesn't want to spend her summer on silly debutante activities, like hanging out at the country club and flirting with the rich boys. She'd rather spend time with the kids in the cancer wing at the local hospital. Wil Deanne's compassion lead her to love -- and heartbreak?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Deanne is a wealthy teen who does not want to follow in her mother's country club footsteps. She respects her father, who is chief physician at the local hospital, and decides to volunteer there for the summer. Unwillingly, she finds herself assigned to the oncology ward and becomes very involved with nice, good-looking Matt, a seriously ill cancer patient. Deanne must struggle with her mother's rather contrived idea of what's good for her, the stereotypical battle ax nurse who runs the volunteers, and, the most believable, her own fears about dealing with people who might die. The story is very simply written and predictable, but its emotional content will probably appeal to preteen and young teen girls. It does give a fairly accurate depiction of life as a teenaged hospital volunteer. 2004 (orig. 1983), Darby Creek Publishing, Ages 12 up.

I just finished this book no longer than five minutes ago and it just made me want to cry. I understood Deanne's pain by reading further and further about her life. To lose such a kind person like Matt is horrible and good. He is in heaven now in the book and thats all we want for our loved ones, right? Such a great book.

well... you see theres this boy that i was love with... but he was dying with cancer... i was a good friend of his... but I couldnt stop the feelings that I had for him.. this book helped me tell this boy how i feel.. and then we went out for 1 year and 3 months.. i know it would have lasted longer....but cancer took its toll and he died yesterday..i miss him soo much but this book really helped me cope... i just wish i had told him sooner so that maybe we could have been together for many years before.... the sad thing is he was only 15 and didnt deserve to die......this book is inspiring but sad beyond belief... becasue the reality of cancer definitely hits you when you read this book... i was afraid to buy it for how it might effect me but.. it reallly helped me soo much.. now all i have to do is cope.. i feel sooo bad for anyone who has cancer and i feel your pain and your families.

I bought and read this book in its origional version in 1983. It was so good. I almost felt like I was part of the story physically and emotionally. I saved this book and handed it down to my teenage daughter. It is now her favorite book as well. I would highly recommend it.

Having gone through a cancer battle with a very close 18 year old friend, I was completely amazed how this story paralleled his story and ours going with him along the way. I recommend this book to anyone battling cancer alongside a teenager. Although it breaks your heart, it makes you realize that you are not alone.

I am helping my daughter find a great book. I want to show her how wonderful it can be to find a book that you fall in love with. When I was in Jr. High I read this book, it was the first that came to my mind. Always loved how it changed me.
