Overview

If it's snowy and you know it, roll a snowball up and throw it, if it's snowy and you know it, clap your paws.   Now in board and perfectly abridged for the youngest readers: another irresistible winter-themed romp from Kim Norman and Liza Woodruff, the team behind the delightful Ten on the Sled! This humorous variation on the classic song “If You're Happy and You Know It” introduces a group of adorable animals playing joyfully in the snow. They ice skate on a lake, catch snowflakes on their tongues, sculpt snowcritters, and make a frosty fort. But can they go with the flow when their wild adventure drifts in a surprising direction? Young readers will laugh and sing along!

The team behind Ten on the Sled presents a rollicking twist on “If You’re Happy and You Know It” starring a bevy of winter-loving animals. Norman offers 11 alliterative verses whose spot-on rhythms and rhymes make singalouds a given: “If your fur is full of flurries, taste a flake./ Skate around or make some angels on a lake.” The verses build a narrative that involves an igloo that nearly drifts to sea, an outdoor picnic, and cozy indoor reading and painting. Woodruff includes lightly comedic moments throughout her mixed-media illustrations (a rabbit zips into its footie pajamas in preparation for a slumber party), which have a warmth that belies the midwinter setting. Ages 3–up. (Oct.)

PreS-Gr 2—The Arctic menagerie from Ten on the Sled (Sterling, 2010) is bundled up and back for another rhythmic romp in the snow. This time the melodic text is based on the familiar "If You're Happy and You Know It" tune. It is perfect for singing or chanting about all of the vigorous wintry activities enjoyed by a seal, hare, walrus, caribou, bighorn sheep, and the rest of the tundra crew. Each of their many snowy pursuits is described in a stanza with strong, alliterative, and colorful vocabulary, culminating in a punch line with oomph: "If the skies are crisp and clearing, grab your skis./Give your tiny friends a ride behind your knees./If the skies are crisp and clearing/let a walrus do the steering./If the skies are crisp and clearing…/…grab your skis!" As the day wanes, the animal gang sensibly winds down, too, with a shared meal, bedtime story, and sleepover inside a cozy cave that sends them all off to their respective adventurous dreams. Watercolor, colored pencil, and pastel illustrations engagingly depict the creatures' fun and frolic, with many humorous details and illustrative subplots to pore over. This paean to winter fun will be enjoyed again and again in any season.—Kathleen Finn, St. Francis Xavier School, Winooski, VT

A wintry riff on the popular participation song, with a cast of appropriate cold-climate animals. A rabbit in sunglasses slides down a snowy hill, using a polar bear pal as a sled. Penguin, walrus, fox and others look on approvingly. The text faithfully follows the rhythms of the song as these characters frolic. "If your fur is full of flurries, taste a flake" shows the walrus making snow angels while the wolf and bighorn sheep skate neat figure eights around him. "If it's shimmery and sunny, sculpt a friend" features almost all the animals making snow animals. (The moose is sunning in a chair with a reflector.) They also build a fort, blow a kiss, give a roar and share a meal ("If it's starry and you're starving..."). Everyone shares a cave at the end of the day: "If it's sleeting and you're sleepy, climb in bed." It's like a big pajama party. In their sleep, all dream of more exciting fun they can have tomorrow. Norman's solid variations on the preschool song are completely singer-friendly, supported by Woodruff's crisply drawn, smiling animals, in watercolor, colored pencil and pastel. Consistently entertaining and engaging. All together now! (Picture book. 3-6)

Praise for the picture book edition of If It's Snowy and You Know It Clap Your Paws! “A wintry riff on the popular participation song, with a cast of appropriate cold-climate animals. . . . Norman's solid variations on the preschool song are completely singer-friendly, supported by Woodruff's crisply drawn, smiling animals, in watercolor, colored pencil and pastel. Consistently entertaining and engaging. All together now!” —Kirkus Reviews   “Here's a cheerful and humorous take on the old, familiar tune . . . Begging to be sung at storytime, the lyrics roll off the tongue easily. Search no longer for the book to brighten long, dreary days. Once children learn the verses, they will sing this tune all winter long. Pair with Ten on the Sled (2010), also by this talented author-illustrator team.” —Booklist
