Overview

This second book in Sarah Mlynowski's charming new series puts a fresh spin on the Cinderella story!

Once upon a time my brother and I found a magic mirror.

Tonight the mirror swept us into Cinderella's fairy tale. Now, we are NOT messing this story up. No way. Cinderella is going to marry her prince just like she's supposed to.

Uh-oh.

Cinderella broke her foot and there's massive swelling. The glass slipper won't fit, the prince won't know she's the one for him, and they won't live happily ever after. And it's all our fault!

To save the day we'll need to:
1. Learn how to use a dustpan
2. Stay out of jail
3. Find Cinderella a job
4. And make sure true love finds its way.

We just have to get it all done before the clock strikes twelve and the chance for a happy ending is gone . . . forever!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
Four nights ago, ten-year-old Abby and her younger brother Jonas discovered that the mirror in their basement is enchanted and serves as a portal to another world. Every night since they returned from their adventure in Snow White's world, they have been trying to get the mirror to work again but each night nothing happens. Finally, on their fourth try, the mirror awakens and works its magic. This time, Abby and Jonas are transported right into the land of Floom and into the middle of Cinderella's fairy tale. Abby is determined they will not mess up this fairy tale like they did Snow White's...but it seems that messing up fairy tales is what this brother-sister team does best. Open up this chapter book, a part of the "Whatever After" series, for a wild rendition of Cinderella that is far different from the Disney or even Grimm Brothers version. Those readers that are looking for the traditional happily-ever-after ending may be slightly disappointed, but those interested in a fresh new twist will be pleasantly entertained. The distinct modern tone of the dialogue and plot will appeal to today's generation of young girls. Overall, this book is full of charming fun and laughter. Reviewer: Justina Engebretson
Kirkus Reviews
Intrepid siblings Abby and Jonah continue their adventures through the realm of fairy tales in this comical story (Fairest of All, 2012). Having recently returned--via magic mirror--from Snow White's world, 10-year-old Abby is searching for answers. She longs to discover why she and her brother were sent into the fairy tale. However, her investigation quickly goes awry when, instead of receiving an explanation, the duo is suddenly transported through the mirror and into a different tale. Once there, an accident involving Abby, the iconic glass slipper and Cinderella's foot alters the course of the traditional story. Soon, the siblings are racing against time to restore the fairy tale and return home. Once again Mlynowski cleverly revises a classic fairy tale, offering a fresh interpretation of Cinderella's story and giving it a modern update. In this version, a feisty fairy godmother challenges Cinderella to rely upon her own ingenuity--not a handsome prince--to remedy her situation, and a formerly mean stepsister becomes quite sympathetic and remorseful. Despite many humorous mishaps and a surprising transformation, the ever-resourceful Abby's savvy wit and Jonah's enthusiastic assistance overcome all obstacles. Readers bewitched by this lively series will enjoy this adventurous sequel. (Fantasy. 9-12)

WHATEVER AFTER if the shoe fits

This book is really good. I'm in grade 6 and found it a little slow and boring at times, but anyone younger (from 3rd grade to 5th grade) would love it. Just like the other book in the series, Abby and Jonah go through their magic mirror into a fairy tale... and mess it all up! If you are in any grade above 5th and you really want to read it, go ahead but I'm just recommending it to younger grades based on my reading experience.

A Modern Twist to a Beloved Fairytale Fantasy

Have you heard the story of Cinderella? Obviously! I'll tell you one thing for sure you have never heard it Mlylnowski's way. This time the magical mirror swept Abby and Jonah into the kingdom of Floom or Cinderella's world. But once again the duo messes the story up. Jonah causes Cinderella to break her foot which makes it swell so big her slipper will not fit,to make matters worse Cinderella's fairy god-mother won't fix it until she learns to be self-relientl. TOTAL BUMMER! But on the other hand Kayla (step-sister) hopes to marry prince Jordan.

I liked the first book in this series, and I liked the second on

I liked the first book in this series, and I liked the second one even more! Abby and Jonah are back and quirkier than ever. I love Abby's enthusiasm and the way she frets over everything. Jonah is just plain funny. He loves to eat the most disgusting things, and always with ketchup!

I like the new twist to the story. Usually, when I read a retelling of a fairy tale, the author follows the original version fairly closely, but I enjoy the various off-roading trips this story takes. You never know where it is going to take you next. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
