Known far and wide for her healing touch, Lady Talarrie Eircelly offers sanctuary for villagers with every manner of ailment - from the heart to the head. But she finds her true mettle tested when her husband is sent into battle, leaving a houseful of children behind - and no cure for their father's absence. VOYA - Vicky Burkholder
When you are fourteen, anything is possible. When you are sixteen and your father has been at war for two years and your village has been burned to the ground, the possibilities can get lost in reality. Tirza helps her mother, Lady Talarrie, deal with the realities that befall their small village when war comes their way. Hardships turn into opportunities under Talarrie's gentle guidance. Tirza knows some of her mother's miracles come from the three crystals she always wears, and Tirza cannot wait until her sixteenth birthday when she earns her own crystal. Her twin brother wants nothing more than a decent horse, but with the war, that is unlikely. When their birthday arrives, Tirza holds her crystal and wishes with all her heart for his horse, unaware that her mother has also wished the same. During the party, the horses start arriving-dozens of them-followed closely by the victorious troops and her father. This is a short, easily-read fairy tale that any McCaffrey fan will enjoy. One admittedly slow reader, who does not like anything, finished it in a day and wanted to know where to get more-which makes for an outstanding recommendation. VOYA Codes: 5Q 2P M J S (Hard to imagine it being better written, For the YA reader with a special interest in the subject, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
