Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Old Rass Throckmorton hires Matt ``Mad Dog'' Stone to help with the harvest of 1894, hoping that he is an honest, steady man who will remain on the Washington State farm and take care of Rass's 34-year-old daughter, Mariah, after Rass is gone. But Mad Dog is a fighter, a womanizer and a would-be writer who constantly drifts--not someone who can help fiesty Mariah overcome loneliness and the trauma of an abusive relationship that still haunts her--until they fall in love. Mariah, Mad Dog, Rass and an adolescent runaway, Jake, stitch together a patchwork family from the scraps of their damaged lives as they make peace with their pasts and prepare for a cold winter. But when Rass dies, the remaining three must make difficult decisions that test the strength of their values as well as that of their relationships. Hannah ( The Enchantment ) writes with candor, tenderness and vivid detail. Her characters are endearing and admirable--notably Mariah, who despite her dark past, retains her sharp wit and strong convictions. (Jan.)

    A "Simple Pleasure" Read

I back tracked for this book and most of Kristin Hannah's older books after first discovering her contemporary novels. (Firefly Lane, and most recently Winter Garden). "If you Believe" was a very offbeat story, rather simple in nature, but rewarding in the end. If you can get past the maddening name of one of the main characters and the slow, confusing beginning, it grows on you and demands your committment to finding out how it will end. Kristin Hannah has a way of putting you in the surroundings and it was kind of relaxing to exist in the quiet, lay back life on a 19th century farm. It's a story of survival of the soul and second chances. It was also interesting to note the subtle changes in her writting style over the years. I would definitely recommend this book.

    WELL-WRITTEN CHARACTERS

THIS IS MY FIRST KRISTIN HANNAH BOOK. TERRIFIC STORY WITH THOROUGH CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. WOULD MAKE AN OUTSTANDING MOVIE.

    Unbelievably well written!

Kristin Hannah's characters have sparked an interest in me before, but Mariah Throckmorton was incredibly real to me. The authors ability to relate this characters needs, both emotionally and physically was incredible.
