Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
With hand-colored photos of grave children holding, sitting on, or clambering over rocks, Christian (Chocolate, A Glacier Grizzly, 1997) poetically suggests picking up pebbles to see if they are skipping rocks or scraping rocks, wishing rocks or worry rocks, or perhaps just rocks with marvelous things in or under them. Lember (The Shell Book, 1997) adds muted but natural-looking tints to soften the lines in her woodsy, idyllic outdoor scenes. Like Meredith Hooper's Pebble in My Pocket (not reviewed), this suggests to children the rewards of taking closer looks at these most commonplace of natural objects. (Picture book. 6-8)

This book has great photos, and fun explanations for different types of rocks children might find when collecting, rather than just the geology of rocks. For instance, describing a "wishing rock", a "chalk rock", etc. It will hold the interest of boys and girls, especially if they love rock hunting.

Photographs demonstrate all this things you can do with a rock such as skipping and making rings in the water. This is an excellent example of literary/ narrative non-fiction. It is also the peaceful story of actively investigating rocks.  This book will fill kids with ideas of things to do with rocks, and might possibly make them want to learn even more about rocks and other related sciences. It makes a good addition to a lesson on soil, rocks, and minerals. It is definitely a hit for the outdoors type.

My 5 year old twins loved this book. Now we collect rocks whenever we go walking and try to classify what type of rock it is. Sweet, thoughtful, and perfect for the youngster interested in nature.
