Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The pair that educated us with If You Give a Pig a Party and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie return with another four-legged conundrum. Everybody knows that if you give a cat a cupcake, he'll ask you for sprinkles to top it…and when you give a cat some sprinkles, we all know what happens: He spills them…. And, needless to say, this entertaining story goes on from there.
Publishers Weekly

If you give an adorable gray kitten a supporting role in a popular series, he'll cry out for a lead-and thus, this latest entry from Numeroff and Bond, which features a cat that first appeared in If You Give a Pig a Party. Like its predecessors, the story bubbles with cascading "if... then" silliness: a girl's granting of a cupcake, for example, leads to a request for sprinkles, which causes a mess; cleaning up gets the cat overheated, which prompts a trip to the beach, and so forth. Some of the connections feel forced even for this series (a ride on a merry-go-round whale inspires a wish to go to a science museum), but the vivacity of the drawings and pertness of the kitty protagonist make up for the shortcomings. Besides, a lot of the series' appeal can be credited to the competency and ingenuity of the various human enablers in the books. While sometimes baffled by the goings-on, the girl in these pages is able to roll with the punches-unlike many adults. Final art not seen by PW. Ages 3-7. (Oct.)

From The Critics

PreS-Gr 2

This story begins with a girl, a cat that originally appeared in Numeroff's If You Give a Pig a Party (HarperCollins, 2005), and a cupcake. The cat asks for some sprinkles, and naturally, they spill on the floor. Cleaning them up makes the cat hot, so he asks for a bathing suit, and hijinks ensue. The resulting series of events leads the protagonist and the cat to the beach, into a boat, through an amusement park, and eventually back to the sprinkles and another cupcake. The familiar madcap illustrations contrast a gleefully mischievous gray cat with a bemused blond girl. The tone is wry, and the story features the zany childhood logic of the earlier titles by this creative team. The concept is beginning to wear thin, but the book will be popular among fans of the series.-Rachael Vilmar, Eastern Shore Regional Library, Salisbury, MD

Meet the Author

Laura Numeroff
Laura Numeroff
Any kid who's dealt with an exasperated adult is sure to appreciate Laura Joffe Numeroff's If You Give a... series, where children take on semi-parental roles with unexpected, demanding animal guests. Numeroff is an expert at silly situations, catchy verses and stories that absorb and engage.

Biography

If you give a series-prone author an inch, she'll take a mile -- and fortunately for fans of Laura Numeroff's books, she took her concept and is still running with it. Her aphoristic animal stories show what happens when you give a little something ... and get a big list of follow-up requests.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and its companion titles have become favorites not only of parents, but of teachers who like the books' visual elements and domino-effect storylines. Numeroff's other popular titles, What Mommies Do Best/What Daddies Do Best and What Grandpas Do Best/What Grandmas Do Best, are loving paeans to activities shared with adults.

A would-be fashion designer who grew up in Brooklyn and now lives in California with a mini-menagerie of pets, Numeroff's stock in trade is her "silly imagination" and her love of animals. Her versatility as a storyteller has been enhanced by the fact that she works with different illustrators, though it also means that all Numeroff titles may not suit the same reader. Her anthropomorphic stories often capitalize on fantasy, but she also has a knack for rhyme, evident in particular in her books Dogs Don't Wear Sneakers and Chimps Don't Wear Glasses.

Numeroff doesn't seem to run out of ideas for ridiculous situations to put people and animals in, nor does she stop celebrating what's special about family relationships. This is what will keep readers coming back to her titles, series-oriented or not.

Good To Know

Numeroff says her parents instilled a love of science and stamp collecting in her as a child, and she has grown into a collector as an adult. Among her collections: stuffed animals, old photographs, autographed children's books, and Halloween masks.

As a teenager, Numeroff was inspired by her sister to become a fashion designer, leading to her attendance at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for college. "Unfortunately," she says, "I hated everything about the fashion department and I couldn't sew to save my life!" Instead, she took a class on writing and illustrating books for children. Her first effort, about the tallest girl in the third grade, was sold before Numeroff graduated. (Amy for Short is now out of print.)

    Purr..fect Little Book

If you have read the other books in the series, you know how cute they are. My kids loved this book! They saw it in the store and went crazy. I like these little books so I had to get it for them. I got it along with three other books: Bats at the Library; Runny Babbit; and Pumpkin Guts, Tater Eyes, and Other Tasty Treats.

    That Darn Cat!

This series is really imaginative and very well received by all the children I know. While 'If You Give A Mouse A Cookie' is still my favorite, this latest addition is a close second. I applaud the longevity of the series and the freshness that is still there today for all these books.

    Nice series

The 'if you give' book series is really nice. I have two two and a half year olds. We have five of the books from this series and my two love all of them. The pictures are bright and colorful but relatively simple. The story is cute and they look forward to each page to see what will happen even though we've read these a million times and they know all the endings. Sometimes series can lack after the first one or two but I think this group is pretty nice throughout. Another I like is if you give a moose a muffin. It's a nice size book. My son loves to hold books under his arm and this one is just the right size. It's not too long for reading at bedtime but long enough to tell a little simple story.

    So cute

My one year old just loves her "cake" book. We read it pretty much everyday and she never tires of it. I have to admit I do not mind reading it every day either, like you do with some childrens books. It is a really cute story which, in a very suitable way, teaches children about consequences. Nothing bad happens to anyone or anything negative, it just shows how our actions affect outcomes and one thing leads to another. It does so in such a cute and appropriate way and not at all heavy handed. My daughter even makes cute noises at certain points in the story so it can be interactive as well. We also have the matching cat stuffed animal.

    Another excellent entry

The Numeroff/Bond team does it again with a charming story of cause and effect, beginning and ending with giving a cat a cupcake. Children love predicting what will happen next and giggle at the illustrations. A worthy purchase.

Christmas books for my godson ,"Golden children's bible" and "if you give a cat a cupcake"

From my sister-in-law "Gannon just loved them...he told my parents about reading the bible! He got into trouble one night and we sent him to his room. I could hear him making some noise and asked him what he was doing and he shouted "I'm reading the bible!"

too funny! I couldn't say it any better

    Very cute children's story

This book is good for small children and pre-readers. As the child learns, this book will be good for them to practice their reading. Not as good as the other "If you give..." books.

I gave this to my 3 year old granddaughter.

We laughed out loud while reading this book. We had to read it over many times. It was fun to discuss how our cats would react to the cupcake scenario and subsequent adventures.
