Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This tale is a rib-tickling circular story like If You Give a Mouse a Cookie but with an ungainly moose who sits crosslegged at a cardtable devouring muffins with blackberry jam. He looks divine in a red sweater and is so talented that he puts on a sock-puppet play complete with scenery. The house is a shambles but anything can happen when a moose is on the loose. 1994 (orig.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2Every school and public library will want at least one copy of the cassette and book If You Give a Moose a Muffin. Laura Numeroff's book (HarperCollins, 1991) has been a big favorite with children since it was first published. Robby Benson is the narrator, and there are page-turn signals on one side of the tape. A girl sings a bouncy song, "Making Muffins," that is not a recipe but a listing of how to put each ingredient into muffins. Kids will quickly learn the song. Finally, there is a rousing song, "Doin' the Moose!," that will have listeners dancing around the room. Prepare to play this quality tape over and over.Linda R. Biography

If you give a series-prone author an inch, she'll take a mile -- and fortunately for fans of Laura Numeroff's books, she took her concept and is still running with it. Her aphoristic animal stories show what happens when you give a little something ... and get a big list of follow-up requests.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and its companion titles have become favorites not only of parents, but of teachers who like the books' visual elements and domino-effect storylines. Numeroff's other popular titles, What Mommies Do Best/What Daddies Do Best and What Grandpas Do Best/What Grandmas Do Best, are loving paeans to activities shared with adults.

A would-be fashion designer who grew up in Brooklyn and now lives in California with a mini-menagerie of pets, Numeroff's stock in trade is her "silly imagination" and her love of animals. Her versatility as a storyteller has been enhanced by the fact that she works with different illustrators, though it also means that all Numeroff titles may not suit the same reader. Her anthropomorphic stories often capitalize on fantasy, but she also has a knack for rhyme, evident in particular in her books Dogs Don't Wear Sneakers and Chimps Don't Wear Glasses.

Numeroff doesn't seem to run out of ideas for ridiculous situations to put people and animals in, nor does she stop celebrating what's special about family relationships. This is what will keep readers coming back to her titles, series-oriented or not.

Good To Know

Numeroff says her parents instilled a love of science and stamp collecting in her as a child, and she has grown into a collector as an adult. Among her collections: stuffed animals, old photographs, autographed children's books, and Halloween masks.

As a teenager, Numeroff was inspired by her sister to become a fashion designer, leading to her attendance at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for college. "Unfortunately," she says, "I hated everything about the fashion department and I couldn't sew to save my life!" Instead, she took a class on writing and illustrating books for children. Her first effort, about the tallest girl in the third grade, was sold before Numeroff graduated. (Amy for Short is now out of print.)

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

A good book for preschoolers and kindergarteners!

This is an overall fantastic read! Younger children will love it! I do not recommend it to children over 8 years old because it is a bit short. But, other than that, kids will love it! There's just something about animals eating such American foods that sets off their imagination! Your toddler or younger child will be ecstatic about IF YOU GIVE A MOOSE A MUFFIN! I strongly recommend this story!

Another Numeroff hit with young readers

As with her other books in this series--If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,etc.--this book will be a real favorite with young readers. As children watch the progression of the story line, they can empathize with the moose's need to get his muffin and get things right. From the humorous situation with a torn sweater to mess resulting from the preparations for the puppet show to the need for a nap after an exhausting day, the story builds to its inevitable conclusion. The colorful illustrations, uncluttered pages, and simple vocabulary make it a fun read for parents as well as the children they read to.

If You Give a Moose a Muffin a fun read for young children

I purchased this book for my 2 year old grandson. He already has If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, and enjoys reading that book again and again. This version is just different enough to keep his attention and still laugh at the silly situations. The series can help to teaching sequencing to youngsters, and understanding consequences, but it's mainly for fun.

    Delightful children's book

This is one you won't mind being asked to read over and over. The story line is simple and imaginative and the illustrations are incredibly charming. It's an easy read and the silly things that happen as each page becomes more elaborate will tickle the youngest child and the most sophisticated reader. No heavy messages, just a fun story so perfect for bedtime or to ease a sad day.

    Love this book

My brother sent us this book and at the age of 35yrs old it is one of my favourites. I am training to be a teacher and everytime I am in a different class I read the book. My children have had me come in and read it to their class and at kindy. The kids all really enjoy it. I plan on having it as part of my class and make sock puppets. It is lots of fun. Every child should have it

    Great for young readers

The 'If You Give...' books are great for young readers. Every child should have a copy of this book and others like it. If you are a teacher of young students you should have these books in your classroom. Great books for children who are just learning to read.

Wonderful, charming and perfect. A true classic.

This gem should be on every kid's bookshelf. I can imagine my son, years from now, going through his old belongings as he prepares for college. All the memories come rushing back as the book goes into the KEEP pile. Really, it's wonderfully enchanting across the parent/child age gap. And I'm not even all that high right now.

    My Son's Favorite

I checked this book out at our local library and was amazed at how wonderful it was. It is a truly wonderful piece of children's literature. The story is very sweet, fun and fanciful and it quickly became my son's favorite book. It is surely to be a hit with any child.

This is a cute book about a destructive moose, but the illustrations are first-rate. Gives giggles to both kids and adults.
