Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Giving a pig a party is a mixed blessing. First, the little porker will ask for some balloons. When you give her the balloons, she'll want to begin a total home makeover. And make no mistake; it only escalates from there…. This rib-tickling porcine treat in the tradition of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Give a Pig a Pancake is definitely a "read it again" book.
Publishers Weekly
The perennially popular party theme, paired with the playfully persistent porcine star of If You Give a Pig a Pancake, ensures that these collaborators' latest addition to the series (which began with If You Give a Mouse a Cookie) will be eagerly celebrated by their fans. After decorating the house with balloons and donning her favorite dress, the party gal attempts to phone her friends to invite them to her fate. Since they aren't home, she jumps in a bicycle basket as her accommodating caregiver transports her to search for them. On the way, they come across a street fair, where the energetic pig finds her pals and enthusiastically enjoys the amusements before they all head home to party. The vision of the girl pedaling her bike with eight animals aboard including a snake coiled atop her head will bring on ample giggles, as will the sight of the pajama-clad menagerie (the snake wears a sock) preparing for a sleepover. Bond makes particularly clever use of the spreads when conveying the mayhem of the bumper cars and pillow fight scenes. As in the earlier volumes of this serendipitous series, this caper comes satisfyingly full circle, with the pig asking for a party all over again. Ages 4-8. (Sept.) Biography

If you give a series-prone author an inch, she'll take a mile -- and fortunately for fans of Laura Numeroff's books, she took her concept and is still running with it. Her aphoristic animal stories show what happens when you give a little something ... and get a big list of follow-up requests.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and its companion titles have become favorites not only of parents, but of teachers who like the books' visual elements and domino-effect storylines. Numeroff's other popular titles, What Mommies Do Best/What Daddies Do Best and What Grandpas Do Best/What Grandmas Do Best, are loving paeans to activities shared with adults.

A would-be fashion designer who grew up in Brooklyn and now lives in California with a mini-menagerie of pets, Numeroff's stock in trade is her "silly imagination" and her love of animals. Her versatility as a storyteller has been enhanced by the fact that she works with different illustrators, though it also means that all Numeroff titles may not suit the same reader. Her anthropomorphic stories often capitalize on fantasy, but she also has a knack for rhyme, evident in particular in her books Dogs Don't Wear Sneakers and Chimps Don't Wear Glasses.

Numeroff doesn't seem to run out of ideas for ridiculous situations to put people and animals in, nor does she stop celebrating what's special about family relationships. This is what will keep readers coming back to her titles, series-oriented or not.

Good To Know

Numeroff says her parents instilled a love of science and stamp collecting in her as a child, and she has grown into a collector as an adult. Among her collections: stuffed animals, old photographs, autographed children's books, and Halloween masks.

As a teenager, Numeroff was inspired by her sister to become a fashion designer, leading to her attendance at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for college. "Unfortunately," she says, "I hated everything about the fashion department and I couldn't sew to save my life!" Instead, she took a class on writing and illustrating books for children. Her first effort, about the tallest girl in the third grade, was sold before Numeroff graduated. (Amy for Short is now out of print.)

    great author, great book

If You Give a Pig a Party is one of Laura Numeroff's If You Give . . . series books. The series, which started with If You Give A Mouse a Cookie never fails to delight young children. They love the friendly characters and humorous story line. The fact that the story comes full circle always sends children into giggles as they clamour "Again! Again!"

If You Give A Pig A Party

I really liked this one because we get to see all of the characters from the other If You.. books. I thought that was a really cute idea. And my 3 yo daughter is starting to recognize them from their own stories. These books really are great for the kids and they aren't too bad for the adults either because its been my experience that you can't just read it once at a time.

    My son loves this book!

This is the first Laura N. book I've ever read and my son can't get enough. We must read this at least twice a day and my husband reads it to him as well. We look forward to reading the other If you give a... series of books.

Children will love seeing their old favorites from previous books (including mouse & moose) partying with the pig and sharing in all the may¿ham¿ that arises!

children will really enjoy this story

My niece absolutely loved 'If You Give Mouse a Cookie'. They're studying the author in her pre-k class and I heard about this new book. I read it today in Barnes and Noble and I purchased it to give to my niece for her birthday next month. I highly recommend it.
