Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mildred Hart
In this book, concise sentences and detailed illustrations combine to place the reader successively in the environments of Abraham Lincoln's early life: the wilderness of Indiana, the small town of Salem, and the larger metropolis of Springfield, Illinois. Descriptions of occupations, houses, stores, and public buildings of the time transport one to Lincoln's world and show the impact each change in his surroundings had on his life. Deerskin moccasins to leather shoes, buckskin breeches to pantaloons, coonskin cap to stovepipe hat illustrate some of the country/city differences in his clothing. Food, entertainment, schools, travel, medicine. and types of employment in the United States during the 1800s are similarly compared. This introduction to Abraham Lincoln helps us understand the background for his success as a leader during the turbulent years of his presidency. The summary pages at the end of the book include a list of the important dates in Lincoln's life, while the text and illustrations combine to give a composite picture of the world in which he lived. Part of the "If You" series.

Table of Contents

"If you grew up with Abraham Lincoln, what kind of house would you live in? How would you travel? What would you do for fun?" These - and 25 other questions children might ask about life in Lincoln's time - are answered in this information-packed book for young readers. The author shows boys and girls what it would be like to live in the same places that Lincoln lived - as a boy in Kentucky and Indiana, as a young man in the prairie town of New Salem, Illinois, and later in the city of Springfield, Illinois. A picture appendix shows what great changes occurred from the time Lincoln was a boy to the time he was President in Washington D.C.
