Ex-Army Ranger Gabriel Vincent is a badass hero. Or he used to be. Home from Afghanistan, Gabe can't stop thinking about that one horrible night on the battlefield, a night that changed his life forever. He knows he's messed up, but with the help of a little beer and a lot more women, he's keeping it together. Until he meets Madison Hill.

Madison is happily single-or so she thinks. After the tragic death of her parents, she took on the responsibility of running the family restaurant, and that's just about all she has time to worry about. Until she meets Gabriel Vincent.

Though they don't realize it at first, Gabe and Maddy will soon develop a weakness: each other. But Gabe has a secret, a hidden monster that he's afraid Maddy could never overcome. And Maddy is dealing with issues she fears Gabe won't understand. They quickly realize they need each other to be whole, but they have demons to fight-and the problem with demons is that they never die quietly. Can they find a way to heal the past . . . before they lose each other?

Cole’s searing second Beautifully Broken contemporary (after If You Stay) portrays the aftereffects of trauma in this riveting, heartbreaking tale of a former Army Ranger who’s witnessed countless atrocities and a woman recovering from a parent’s abuse. Gabriel Vincent has left the military, but he can’t leave his memories behind. Madison Hill’s brutal father and battered mother die in a car wreck, leaving her running the family restaurant and doggedly avoiding romantic relationships. Gabe heads to the tiny Illinois town of Angel Bay for his sister’s birthday—and runs unexpectedly into Maddy, who he’d had a memorable encounter with in Chicago. Gabe tries to convince Maddy to take a chance on him, but they both may have too many demons to fight. Cole doesn’t stint on the graphic descriptions of horrors in war and at home, giving readers an unflinching look at the realities of PTSD while bringing the slow-building relationship between Maddy and Gabe to a delicious peak of passion. WOW. After loving If You Stay, I had high hopes for If You L

WOW. After loving If You Stay, I had high hopes for If You Leave. Madison was a terrific character in that novel, and was definitely worthy of a story of her own. What I didn't count on was Gabriel Vincent. This man, his story... blew this book wide open. I won't continue to draw comparisons between the two, but for as much as I loved If You Stay, I loved If You Leave even more.

If You Leave is a fairly heavy story. First there's Madison, who hinted at having some issues in If You Stay, but since that was Mila's story, we never got the full picture. Madison's issue is her parents' relationship and deaths. Not only did her parents die and leave her responsible for their business and younger sister Mila, but she also had a lot of unresolved feelings toward her abusive father and accepting mother. Madison's answer was to lock it all away. Keep her feelings to herself, and just keep living. Eventually, something's got to give, and a push comes in the form of her best friend's brother, Gabriel.

"Fear is a choice, Maddy. But so is being happy."

Then you have Gabriel Vincent. Gabriel is a former Army Ranger, and it is obvious from the first page that he is in a bad way. Gabriel is drowning in guilt, so much so that he's barely hanging on. I'm not going to endlessly analyze Gabriel, because I couldn't possibly do him justice. I can say that Cole did an excellent job in the characterization of a man who may have left the battlefield, but the fight is far from over. I truly feel that she did a beautiful, thorough, and realistic job with Gabriel's story. She does justice and honor those who have and continue to serve. She is also bringing awareness to the mental trauma sustained in war. This, in my opinion, is what makes If You Leave shine.

I know that I haven't touched on the romance aspect yet, but I did love it. Gabriel and Madison get off to an intense start, and it seems like a hot and heavy, fast-moving romance is headed our way, but Cole does take time to develop the relationship. And, as much as Gabriel and Madison feel for one another, the physical aspect to their relationship does not outweigh the emotional, and for that I am happy.

In case you haven't picked up on it yet, If You Leave is a beautiful and emotional story. I embraced these characters and I was invested in their individual stories, and their relationship. I was happy that Pax and Mila played quite a large part in the story as well. If You Leave is another fantastic book from Courtney Cole. Her best yet.

If You Leave gripped my heart from the very first page. The mome

If You Leave gripped my heart from the very first page. The moment this story began I was swept into Gabriel’s world. Gabe is an army ranger, home from Afghanistan along with his best friend Brand, trying to forget all of the horrific things that haunt his dreams. Madison has been devastated by loss and left living someone else’s life out of guilt and fear. The characters in this story are nothing short of breathtaking. Courtney Cole has a way of crafting characters that are absolutely damaged, completely lost and often infuriating in their resolve that they don’t deserve happiness. Somehow, she also makes them incredibly lovable, painfully relatable and the kindest of souls. Her ability to construct such character depth is stunning and I am constantly in awe of the personalities, relationships and stories that come from these complex and vulnerable characters.

Courtney Cole rises above and beyond the challenge of this storyline. Gabe suffers from PTSD, an illness that affects far too many military personnel and is unfortunately poorly understand among the general population. Every internal battle Gabe was forced to wage with himself, every earth shattering flashback and soul crushing night terror took some of his pain and made it my own. It felt real and raw and honest and unavoidable. Courtney Cole managed to not only paint a clear picture of his suffering, but to make it our own. This book had my emotions in overdrive. As Madison and Gabe questioned the good and the bad of the world, their conflict swirled in my own head, begging me to examine what I believe about war, loss and the human spirit. If You Leave had me in the clutches of an ugly cry right up until the very last page. Courtney Cole certainly outdid herself with If You Leave. This book is not to be missed!

I really liked this book.  I feel in love with Pax and Mila and loved they had a role in this book too.  I could have read more.  The beginning was great with all the detail, but I felt like it went from a little dry to rushed to wrap everything up.  Gabe and Maddy are wonderful characters and can't wait to see if they play a role in Jace's turn in the next book.  Courtney is a great author and will continue to read her books.

    more from this reviewer

I have read several books by this author and this series by far

I have read several books by this author and this series by far is my favorite.

Plot: This author really knows how to make the story come alive. The fact this plot is mostly based on PTSD really gives the characters drive and real emotion. Every element in the story, reaches to the reader, bringing them firmly in the characters thoughts and feelings. If anything, this plot kept me fully engaged.

Love: Finding love in the midst of trouble is very humbling. Both characters face some hard times, but having each other allows them to rely on each other and move on. They both want to fix themselves so that they are good enough for what they want. I didn’t particularly like their decision when they fell off the wagon. While I understand circumstances, making those decisions is not an excuse. Still, I like that the two managed to overcome their troubles and learn to love one another.

Gripe: While I love the fact that the previous characters, Pax and Mila made cameos, I really felt there was too much interaction with them. At first, Pax and Mila come in playing the good couple roles, then they suddenly become the meat of the story. Their lives become entangled in it and I felt that it took away from Gabriel and Madison’s story. I understand that Madison and Mila are sisters so interaction with each other is inevitable. Its good that there is friendship with all of them, but at times I felt like there is no reason why these two should be involved. It’s not their story anymore. Drama in their life needs to stay in their life. You know what I mean?

Other than that, I felt that this story is an excellent addition. It brings light to a real condition that many suffer from. It brings an understanding of hope and love, even in the midst of trouble. A sincere story, If You Leave is endearing.
