Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
While the presentation might not be glamorous, the information and style are captivating as McGovern does a superb job of relating a sense of the past to children. A fine historical writer and researcher, McGovern focuses on 1890s New York and uses the details children adore to let them know exactly what it felt like to live in all classes of society at the turn of the century. Written as a series of questions and answers, the book gives a sense of every day life--bathrooms, the latest clothing styles, costs, fast food of the 1890s, slang, and the games and amusements people pursued. 1999, Scholastic, Ages 8 up, $5.99. Teaching about change

I was introducing the concept of change or time in my second grade class and I thought this book would be of some help. It turned out that this book is more for diplay than for a lesson. The illustrations are hard to understand for the children. The class must have schema before showing this text. The book works after other lessons or text have been presented. If class has no schema of New York understanding is limited. It did help to bring questions from the students but I am not sure of the understanding of a change in time. I would not reccommend this text for lesson planning but I would add to classroom reference library.

    My son enjoyed it.

My 7 year old loves reading these types of books. It really opens up an opportunity to teach them about the differences in what goes on today and what happened 100 years ago. Great book.

    Great read for children.

This book is awesome reading with your children. My 7 year old son listened intently as I read the first 50 pages to him. The information is so interesting, and my son was amazed people lived like that. It is a very useful history tool. It also sparks questions and conversations regarding this topic. It is a book you could read together over and over, then pass it to your child and have hime read it alone. Great book.
