This title is one in an updated series of "If You" books that present an event in history, ask a series of questions about the event, and provide answers complete enough to interest elementary aged students. This book asks twenty-nine questions about the Civil War after a simplified introduction about it. Questions such as "How did the war start? to Did children continue to go to school in the South and North?, to "Was it hard to get food in the North and South?" are briefly answered. Most answers are from the point of view of a child experiencing the war. Watercolor illustrations add interest but seem sanitized rather than a realistic portrayal of the times. Some discussion of important political and military figures is included, as well as a list of civil war historical sites that can be visited today.
