Basic facts about the Sioux Indians and their lives in the early 1800's are presented in a straightforward way. Their nomadic lifestyle is described, including the materials and structures of tepees and the tribe's dependence on the buffalo. Nothing of the buffalo was wasted. In addition to serving as the main source of their food supply, needles were made of bones and sinew became thread for sewing. Cups and spoons were made of horns and the stomach of the buffalo could be used for pots and for food storage. Activities of childhood, such as learning to swim and ride horses, are followed with accounts of the rites into adulthood, courting practices, and marriage rituals. Religious beliefs and worship were integral parts of the everyday lives of the Sioux. They enjoyed excellent health, exercising good habits, and following the advice of shamans—until the advent of the white man introduced many diseases previously unknown. Descriptions of their communication, and sometimes battles, with other tribes feature ways that Indians achieved honor among their people. The closing chapters present the deterioration of the traditional life of the Sioux and show the contrast from that to their present- day lives. Although the cover states that the book is "new and updated," its appeal for contemporary students may be limited. The question and answer format seems strained and artificial. The pastel illustrations, although informative, are static, lacking the action that children of today expect. A table of contents, an index, and a list of places to visit in North and South Dakota may be of value to young researchers.
