Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennifer Bertman
Part of the "Word Fun" series, this title is a colorful and imaginative introduction to the role of the preposition in the English language. The text poses the scenario of what you would be doing if you were a preposition, giving example sentences with the prepositions emphasized in a bold, colorful font. Animals are depicted in the illustrations demonstrating the prepositions—a goat walking beside a shed, a tarantula crawling over a stack of books, a hamster sleeping during the day. The lively example sentences and whimsical drawings are occasionally bogged down with wordy explanations about prepositional phrases or modifiers, but this seems to be a necessary departure from the quick, concise examples if the book is to be a thoroughly educational tool. Included at the end of the book is an activity, a glossary, references for learning more about prepositions, an index, and a list of the other books in the series. Although the picture book format is designed to appeal to younger children, older children and adults might also appreciate the fun and simple approach to grammar.
