Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Follow two different stories in this book about a punctuation mark: the exclamation point. The informational story defines and describes the purpose of the exclamation point and on the title page, there is an inset that states a brief definition and the purpose of the exclamation point. The second story involves a colorfully illustrated parade that is coming through the town. The text of this second story uses exclamation points with the sounds of the band instruments and the excited voices of the children talking while watching the parade. The parade story provides examples of using exclamation points which are highlighted in the story. Young readers may need support in understanding how these two storylines work in the book. At the back of the book, there is a "Quick Review" that summarizes the purpose of the exclamation points and provides examples. The activity that is provided is a drill of writing commands for playing "Simon Says"; each command is to have an exclamation point at the end. Student-generated stories may provide for a more authentic experience of using the exclamation point. For more resources on punctuation marks, there is a list of additional books and the FactHound website. This book is a part of the "Word Fun: Punctuation" series which include the comma, period, question mark, apostrophe, and quotation marks. The books in the series follow a similar format and presentation. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
