Action Packed For those more comfortable on the move, a handful of titles suggest opportunities to play. If You're Happy and You Know It! by Jane Cabrera provides a cast of animal characters in swirls of thick brushstrokes to demonstrate the popular song's lyrics. Orange monkeys clap hands, pink elephants stamp feet and a lemur with a spiraling striped tail spins around in a tropical landscape. (Mar.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

PreS-K-In Cabrera's version of the popular children's song, various animals demonstrate the motions for the many verses. Monkey claps his hands, elephant stamps his feet, while giraffe nods his head. Concluding pages have a Hollywood Square montage of all nine animals who all cry at once "If you're happy and you know it, shout-We are!" Cheerful painterly pictures in a kaleidoscope of colors enhance the jovial mood of the song. Appearance of brush strokes gives texture to the animals, and the large black font is easy to read. This book will be an enjoyable storytime filler for those libraries not already owning Jan Ormerod's If You're Happy and You Know It (Star Bright, 2003).-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A menagerie of jungle critters engage in some foot-stomping, hand-clapping, rip-roaring sing-along fun that just begs for audience participation. Using the lyrics to the classic song, a sassy monkey invites readers to clap their hands to show it. A mammoth pink elephant encourages everyone to stamp their feet, a towering orange giraffe asks all to nod their heads and a feisty lion urges listeners to roar out loud. Each exuberant creature perfectly matches the activity it promotes, from the kissing hippos with their wide mouths to the jumping frog with his springy legs. Cabrera's primitive illustrations are big, bold and brilliant, allowing each action-packed animal to explode across a double-paged spread in riotous colors and abstract shapes that keep pace with the rhythmic lyrics. Guaranteed to get preschoolers (and maybe their sleepy caregivers) moving. (Picture book. 3-6)
