Detweiler (A Matrix of Meanings), who teaches communication at Pepperdine University, in Malibu, Calif., examines today’s technology, from Apple to Instagram, and its impact on Americans’ spiritual lives. He knows the literature, organizes it as a good information curator should, and cites the provocative and deeper thinkers such as Jaron Lanier and Kevin Kelly. He does forget that not everyone is on Facebook and that smart phones are common but not universal, which is understandable given that he teaches and so is surrounded by the wired generation. The balance between theological reflection and simple background reporting could be better tuned. Most of today’s technology writers don’t understand the lure of iDols. An excellent conversation starter recommended for classroom use; Detweiler has made a solid contribution to the growing literature about religion and technology. (Nov.)

    In his book iGods, Dr. Detweiler follows the footprints of the internet pioneers that built the platforms for today's online world. This detailed analysis follows Apple, Amazon, Google, and Facebook. The thrust of the book is to reveal how much of our online world has been shaped for us. Detweiler frequently refers to these "walled gardens" - news articles often refer to these as ecosystems - e.g. Apple/Amazon/Google/Microsoft all provide devices such as tablets, apps, online services including games, movies, music, cloud storage... and they want your credit card for easy purchasing and they want your time for advertising revenues. The book discusses Google's rank algorithms that decide what sites best answer your queries, how Apple provides you with online devices, and how Amazon let's you know what you need to buy, and how Facebook keeps you current with the posts of your online community. The book is written with the intent of encouraging a Christian reader to question the lifestyle that most people have fallen into, including the expectations of being always available, sharing all important news online, and multitasking rather than giving those around us our full attention. The book is a good read for anyone, regardless of faith, to understand how the online world has engulfed us and to question how our perceptions are managed by an online world controlled by iGods... (originating from Steve Jobs, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Bezos, Zuckerberg, etc). Enjoy!
