Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Della A. Yannuzzi
Another book in the "Cool Pets!" portion of the "Far-Out and Unusual Pets" series looks at iguanas. Although iguanas are not warm and cuddly, many people choose them as household pets. Iguanas are reptiles and cold-blooded creatures. Some of them can grow to 5 or 6 feet long. Wild iguanas live mostly in the forests of southern Mexico, Central America and South America. In the 1950s and 1960s, large numbers were taken from the wild and brought to America, where they quickly became popular pets. Iguanas are vegetarians, eating plant foods, fruits and vegetables. Iguanas like warm temperatures and don't survive well in colder places. A baby iguana is small enough to hold in a hand, but in three to four years, it can grow very large. It also has sharp teeth and may bite when it gets upset. It takes time for an iguana to get used to handling. One sign that it is relaxed is that its tail hangs down loosely. As with other pets, iguanas need care and attention. As iguanas grow bigger, they may need a large indoor or outdoor cage. They also need the right temperatures in order to survive. Iguanas are tropical animals and can't keep their bodies warm enough in a cold place. Iguanas can also be trained, but it will take time and patience. The authors do a good job of describing what to takes to be a responsible iguana pet owner. An iguana can live or twenty years or more, so it's important to decide carefully if an iguana is the right choice for a pet. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi
