Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
If you are a Nickelodian fan then you might recognize the stars from iCarly. Carly and her best friend Samantha are getting ready for a science project. They are going to be partners, but they do not know what they are going to do. Carly's older brother gives them an idea and they decide to hatch a bunch of chicks. So for their next TV show the focus is eggs, specifically hatching half a dozen of them. Problems start when the chicks hatch before they are supposed to and escape from the incubator. The girls and their friends only have a few hours to round them up before they die from exposure and lack of food—they are supposed to be fed every four hours. The hunt is on, and they do find them in strange places and getting into some silly predicaments. The story is peppered with stills from the TV show, and they clearly show the silly antics. Of course, all ends well, but there are some quibbles with this story. There is no mention of the need to get fertilized eggs—a reader could easily get the impression that taking eggs out of the refrigerator and putting them in the incubator would work. Also, nothing is said about feeding and caring for the chicks and what will eventually be done with them once they have outgrown the incubator. This book is targeted to loyal TV fans.
