Il Divoby Il Divo
Building on the success of such popular acts as Amici Forever and the Three Tenors, the all-male quartet Il Divo join forces for this stirring self-titled debut. The result of a talent search launched by American Idol judge Simon Cowell, the photogenic foursome -- Spaniard Carlos Marin, American David Miller, Frenchman Sebastian Izambard, and Swiss Urs Buhler -- put forth their collective vocal talents in a program of operatically flavored pop, including such favorites as "Nella Fantasia" (a Sarah Brightman signature) and an Italian version of "My Way," as well as songs in Spanish (the opening "Regresa a mi" -- based on Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart") and English ("Every Time I Look at You"). Save for Izambard, who is branded "vox populi," each boasts classical training, and when singing together, their rich, primed-for-Verdi voices form a potent blend that many will find exhilarating. It's as if Russell Watson, Mario Frangoulis, Josh Groban, and Andrea Bocelli united to form a classical-crossover dream team. Of course, one listener's delight is another's schmaltz, and the largely sentimental, Vegas-ready numbers here will change no one's point of view on the joys (or otherwise) of "popera." But those whose CD collections have grown apace with the rapid rise of crossover in recent years will deem the gifted hunks of Il Divo wholly irresistible.

I bought my first Il Divo dual disc so that I could watch these very talented singers perform in both the concert at Gotham Hall and the Regresa A Mi video. The dual disc has the 13 songs from the CD on the CD side and they are also on the DVD side, but in PCM stero which is outstanding. I first bought their self-titled CD, Il Divo and was afraid I had it almost worn out as I played it all the time. David, Carlos, Urs and Sebastien have a very evident passion for their music and they bring it to their audiences. They each can sing on their own, but as they blend their voices together it takes you to a whole different level. Each time I listen to them my heart and soul soar high above the ground leaving all else behind as I join their musical world. They love to sing for others, you see it in their eyes and body movement as well as hearing it in their voices, the way they interact with each other and the way they sing directly to you....never at you. It doesn't matter if you speak the language they are singing in (they sing in English, Spanish, and Italian), because your heart always understands. I buy both the CD's and the dual disc's to give as very welcome gifts.
Excellent! Best music available. Voices they should be proud of. Obviously have worked very hard at their craft. Cannot hear them without being moved. Thank you for your talent.
All my friends are tiring of hearing me rave about the CD. I listen every chance I get. I'm not a fan of opera but I do appreciate trained voices. As an aspiring student of Italian, I'm having fun translating the lyrics of those songs in Italian. I'm looking forward to the next CD Buona fortuna Il Divo!
This is the ultimate album of love songs. I have never heard songs delivered with such feeling.
What can I say about this extrodianry quartet. Beautiful arrange voices that can sing me to sleep any night(especially Carlos). Simmon Cowell may be a pain but he knows talent when he hears it. There rich voices and spectacular talent makes this cd an istant classic. I do hope they plan on staying around. They are also easy on the eyes and made themselves a favorite on my list.
I personally do not think that Il Divo is anything spectacular or new. I think they are over done and sound too mixed. I will admit that these singers do have talent, but they would sound better alone. I think they will be the hip new boy band for a few weeks and then they will fade off into obscurity.
I heard them first on Goodmorning America, I think. I immediately ordered a CD for myself and one for each of my four childres-grown adults. You can understand why "Mama" reduces me to tears. Such beautiful voices and such perfect pitch...they blend together without fault. I listened to them continually. I found that my kids loved them also, because they had them in their cars to hear on the way to work, etc. Thanks for this wonderful group.
I was very excited to listen to the album after reading all the great reviews. But the music itself is completely disappointing. Their voices are really not that spectacular, and the arrangements are uninteresting. Whoever called it Popera is absolutely correct - it's not real classical music, and shouldn't be in that category. There are some really good vocalists out there, and for this album to be so popular is a sad commentary on music listeners.
I had never heard of Il Divo until my aunt played the cd in her car. I fell in love and bought it the very next day. I love all the songs and play it over and over again in my car, in my computer, and every chance I get. I love the song "Passera" even though I don't understand a word of it and I think Sebastian is gorgeous!! I can't wait until they come to my area to perform.
I found them by accident and I am forever grateful. My mother, 85 yrs old, loves this group. Although she doesn't understand the various languages they sing, she is mesmerized just like I am. Some of their work is invigorating and stimulating, other is emotional, others relaxing/soothing. They have it and do it all.
Sometimes the best in artistic impression is knowing when enough is enough and this is too much. Three stars for talent and good looks but I think the production deserves a minus 1 yielding a final score of 2 stars. They're so silicone they are primed for a billing as Il Divo "Vivo" Las Vegas.
Il Divos' voices are mind blowing. David Miller's Tenor and harmonizing is heart wrenching and beautiful at the same time. Carlos Marin's Baritone and range is amazing and refreshing. Urs Buhler's voice is unique and indescribable sort of a Steve Perry (from Journey) voice where it sounds great it doesn't matter what type of voice he has. Sebastien Izambard has a beautiful tenor that is more pop but still a perfect match with the three classically trained operatic singers. You won't be disappointed if you pick this up and are looking for true talent and voices.
Never heard of Il Divo until this week and was deeply moved at the experience of listening to their first CD. They are right up there with Groban, Bocelli and other fresh voices in this music "genre!" Am buying this CD for the mothers (young and old!) in my family for Mother's Day!
With all the new remakes of old songs these guys top everything! They really know how to make it sound new and put their own style into it. I love these guys and I recommend buying this CD to all my friends! They sure aren't bad to look at either.
listen and enjoy!!!!!!
Until last Friday night during the Daytime Emmy Awards I had never heard of IL DIVO but once I heard their Italian version of Unchained Melody I became hooked. They have a new fan for life. LIA78
What a pleasure to finally listen to some great music by young men who are absolutely the best! If you want the hair to stand up on your arms, PLEASE buy this CD!
I was watching TV and waiting impatiently for the commercials to end when I heard this beautiful sound coming out of the television. It immediately grabbed my attention. After hearing this new group, Il Divo, sing, I took the next available opportunity to buy the CD. To those people who think this group is inferior, I say have you heard some of the garbage that passes for music these days? Stop complaining!
This is great to listen to with a cup of tea when you can relax and get into the music and the voices of angels.
Nothing have moved me and delivered such pleasure as listening and watching Il Divo perform. These four formed a great powerhouse of sounds. They are different and hands down talented as individual singers ,but when they sing in harmony they create magic. Their debut CD exceeded my expectations. I saw them on Oprah, and heard their signature song(Unbreak my heart), and that didn't affect me the way the other songs did. I don't care if they'll never make another CD ever again, I'll cherrish the one I have. It was inspiring and just made me feel really good and happy, something I haven't felt in a while.
This is bloddy awful -- get a bunch of goodlooking guys together you can sell anything -- they could just as well sell food choppers. No wonder classical music is in trouble.
you can diss Il Divo all you want but I'd like to see you sing like they do and get a record deal...no, they're not perfect, but who is? you can't deny record sales which, so far, have been amazing! just let the men sing, for goodness sakes- if you don't like them don't listen to them!
Wow! These guys are amazing! They all have such rich--and big--voices that blend so well together. Having spent years studying classical and opera music, I probably listen more critically to technique above all else, of which there were a few glitches on this album, none of which most people would catch. But in a world where classical music is termed "long-haired" and only for "old" people, these guys bring a fresh and young perspective, even to current and popular songs, guaranteed to draw you into the rich world of classical and opera music.
What an absolute pleasure it is. I'm already looking forward to their next CD.
