Building on the success of such popular acts as Amici Forever and the Three Tenors, the all-male quartet Il Divo join forces for this stirring self-titled debut. The result of a talent search launched by American Idol judge Simon Cowell, the photogenic foursome -- Spaniard Carlos Marin, American David Miller, Frenchman Sebastian Izambard, and Swiss Urs Buhler -- put forth their collective vocal talents in a program of operatically flavored pop, including such favorites as "Nella Fantasia" (a Sarah Brightman signature) and an Italian version of "My Way," as well as songs in Spanish (the opening "Regresa a mi" -- based on Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart") and English ("Every Time I Look at You"). Save for Izambard, who is branded "vox populi," each boasts classical training, and when singing together, their rich, primed-for-Verdi voices form a potent blend that many will find exhilarating. It's as if Russell Watson, Mario Frangoulis, Josh Groban, and Andrea Bocelli united to form a classical-crossover dream team. Of course, one listener's delight is another's schmaltz, and the largely sentimental, Vegas-ready numbers here will change no one's point of view on the joys (or otherwise) of "popera." But those whose CD collections have grown apace with the rapid rise of crossover in recent years will deem the gifted hunks of Il Divo wholly irresistible.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Christopher Monger
International classical crossover quartet Il Divo didn't start out in the garage practicing their exceptionally fluid tenors among the din of outraged neighbors and summer construction crews; rather, they were hunted by producers for two years like wild game in their native lands and herded into the studio, where they were sculpted into a machine of such smoldering European romanticism that the world would have no choice but to rip their very hearts out upon first listen. Sound overly dramatic? You bet, which is why Il Divo's self-titled debut depends entirely on one's opinion of Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On." Extremely wealthy producers Per Magnusson and David Krueger (Backstreet Boys), along with Steve Mac (Charlotte Church) have created the Three Tenors -- in this case four -- for the next generation, and if the first single, a cover of Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart," is any indication, all involved should see their stock rise. American tenor David Miller, French heartthrob Sbastien Izambard, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, and Spanish baritone Carlos Marin tackle standards like "My Way" and "Unchained Melody" with an expert precision and pomp -- the latter is sung in Italian -- that aptly conveys their obvious talents. An achingly beautiful arrangement of "Gabriel's Oboe" -- known here as "Nella Fantasia" -- from Ennio Morricone's score for The Mission is sweeping and grand, but there is no denying the sheer Monkees/Menudo/American Idol consumerism of the whole venture -- this is Idol "Grinch" Simon Cowell's baby. Il Divo may only last long enough to rid the world of a few billion dollars -- probably on one tour alone -- but there's no doubt that the hands that hold the strings above them are already in the war room planning their next kill.

I bought my first Il Divo dual disc so that I could watch these very talented singers perform in both the concert at Gotham Hall and the Regresa A Mi video. The dual disc has the 13 songs from the CD on the CD side and they are also on the DVD side, but in PCM stero which is outstanding. I first bought their self-titled CD, Il Divo and was afraid I had it almost worn out as I played it all the time. David, Carlos, Urs and Sebastien have a very evident passion for their music and they bring it to their audiences. They each can sing on their own, but as they blend their voices together it takes you to a whole different level. Each time I listen to them my heart and soul soar high above the ground leaving all else behind as I join their musical world. They love to sing for others, you see it in their eyes and body movement as well as hearing it in their voices, the way they interact with each other and the way they sing directly to you....never at you. It doesn't matter if you speak the language they are singing in (they sing in English, Spanish, and Italian), because your heart always understands. I buy both the CD's and the dual disc's to give as very welcome gifts.

Excellent! Best music available. Voices they should be proud of. Obviously have worked very hard at their craft. Cannot hear them without being moved. Thank you for your talent.

I saw them perform on OPRAH and they were teriffic. Quality vocal blending. Easy listening. Much like the Irish tenors but with a modern twist. Highly recommended.

Simon Cowell has found a true treasure. Unlike any group or sound I have ever heard before. They truly will be a phenomenon. Each one of them could be a star on their own.

This is bloddy awful -- get a bunch of goodlooking guys together you can sell anything -- they could just as well sell food choppers. No wonder classical music is in trouble.

I got this CD months ago when I was in the UK. The guys all sing well and their voices blend together nicely but this is not a great CD. The choice of music is standard "popera" fare. It works well for IL DIVO but there is just nothing outstanding. I liked The Opera Band by Amici Forever and the Celtic Tenors better. They both have more interesting arrangements. Still this is not a bad CD and it is worth listening to. It's better than anything on the radio and makes my drive to work enjoyable.

I thought perhaps that the other reviewer was just bitter, but he is 100% correct. This is an terrible CD, and it cannot be qualified as classical music. Anyone who is a true fan of classical music would not buy this album, which is merely cheap, hollow Adult Contemporary masquerading as something new. There is no imagination or depth to the music, and listening just leaves you hungry for real music. These gentlemen cannot be fairly compared to any Opera or Classical Vocalist, because their voices do not have the timbre or quality necessary for the pieces selected. All in all a sad attempt at music.

Sometimes the best in artistic impression is knowing when enough is enough and this is too much. Three stars for talent and good looks but I think the production deserves a minus 1 yielding a final score of 2 stars. They're so silicone they are primed for a billing as Il Divo "Vivo" Las Vegas.

I think they are great. I am not a classical music fan. But the first time I heard them I was amazed. Their voice together sounds perfect to people who does not listen to opera all the time. Yes, they were trained as Opera singers, but this CD is not only for people who likes opera/classical music. It is for everybody.

This group IL DIVO performs a fantastic album! They Sounded like cross between opera, classical and pop music. The music and performance so differently and so original, that I haven’t see it from anywhere else! I am delighted to announce that I have finally got something so unique to listen to (other than typical music out there). I think IL DIVO really creates a new era for musical field.

All of my senses were aroused, when by chance, I tuned into Oprah one day. Yes, they are young and they're extremely cute, however, I say give Il Divo a chance. No, they are not Bocelli or Pavarotti but at least their are singing something you wouldn't have to turn off because a child was present. Music in general has been on a down hill spiral for quite some time and its good to see that at least there's an attempt to produce and put quality back into music. I for one recommend Il Divo's CD and look forward to future endeavors from this new emerging talent both collectively and individually.

Wow! These guys are amazing! They all have such rich--and big--voices that blend so well together. Having spent years studying classical and opera music, I probably listen more critically to technique above all else, of which there were a few glitches on this album, none of which most people would catch. But in a world where classical music is termed "long-haired" and only for "old" people, these guys bring a fresh and young perspective, even to current and popular songs, guaranteed to draw you into the rich world of classical and opera music.

What an absolute pleasure it is. I'm already looking forward to their next CD.

If you really want to hear opera, buy yourself a CD of Placido Domingo or Luciano Pavarotti or Renee Fleming or Maria Callas or another great OPERA singer. I'm sorry but these are not great opera singers - some of them haven't even been classically trained. Stop thinking that people like Charlotte Church or Il Divo or Grobin or Bocelli are great opera singers because they are not! If this music makes you happy all the more power to you but it's not great opera - it's not even opera.

They are just amazing! I've heard from them from opra show, and tonight Jay. They are just breath taking, i going to buy this CD as soon as i have time to go out. I am NOT an opra fan, and when i heard this, it opends a lot of new viws to me. I am only 16!! I always love rock kind of music, and its very heard for some peole like me to like this kind of music. And i like it. BUY IT PEOPLE!!

I like almost all types of music including classical and pop, but have grown tired of mediocre voices singing pop. These four men have incredible voices and they blend very well together. This is a great album for a Saturday morning in the office - turn it up and enjoy!
Guest More than 1 year ago
As much as I think each of these singers are very good singers regardless of them being classically trained or not. They do indeed each have their OWN very rich voice. I have to say that listening to each track made my head spin because of wanting their voices to meld more into one another or at least enrich each others vocal. I felt that I was bouncing up against the wall because my body was conflicted on each vocal. I would seriously consider purchasing a CD by them as individual artists, but not as Il Divo. Shame on you Simon for putting together a group of very talented men that will fail as a group. You should have promoted them individually.

you can diss Il Divo all you want but I'd like to see you sing like they do and get a record deal...no, they're not perfect, but who is? you can't deny record sales which, so far, have been amazing! just let the men sing, for goodness sakes- if you don't like them don't listen to them!

I was watching TV and waiting impatiently for the commercials to end when I heard this beautiful sound coming out of the television. It immediately grabbed my attention. After hearing this new group, Il Divo, sing, I took the next available opportunity to buy the CD. To those people who think this group is inferior, I say have you heard some of the garbage that passes for music these days? Stop complaining!
Guest More than 1 year ago
I did not buy this expecting a Classical Masterpiece. I knew they were talented singers with great voices that chose music that would appeal to the masses around the world. I think they were sucessful. My daughter, age 35, my father, ager 89 and I, age 55 all loved it. Great selection of music. Some easy listening, some uplifting, some moving, some inspiring some made a tear drop. Whether you understand the lyrics (not all in English) or not, the music and voices are so good that it is a good demonstration that music is the international language. I recommend it.

I personally do not think that Il Divo is anything spectacular or new. I think they are over done and sound too mixed. I will admit that these singers do have talent, but they would sound better alone. I think they will be the hip new boy band for a few weeks and then they will fade off into obscurity.
