Building on the success of such popular acts as Amici Forever and the Three Tenors, the all-male quartet Il Divo join forces for this stirring self-titled debut. The result of a talent search launched by American Idol judge Simon Cowell, the photogenic foursome -- Spaniard Carlos Marin, American David Miller, Frenchman Sebastian Izambard, and Swiss Urs Buhler -- put forth their collective vocal talents in a program of operatically flavored pop, including such favorites as "Nella Fantasia" a Sarah Brightman signature and an Italian version of "My Way," as well as songs in Spanish the opening "Regresa a mi" -- based on Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart" and English "Every ...

Barnes & Noble - EJ Johnson
Building on the success of such popular acts as Amici Forever and the Three Tenors, the all-male quartet Il Divo join forces for this stirring self-titled debut. The result of a talent search launched by American Idol judge Simon Cowell, the photogenic foursome -- Spaniard Carlos Marin, American David Miller, Frenchman Sebastian Izambard, and Swiss Urs Buhler -- put forth their collective vocal talents in a program of operatically flavored pop, including such favorites as "Nella Fantasia" a Sarah Brightman signature and an Italian version of "My Way," as well as songs in Spanish the opening "Regresa a mi" -- based on Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart" and English "Every Time I Look at You". Save for Izambard, who is branded "vox populi," each boasts classical training, and when singing together, their rich, primed-for-Verdi voices form a potent blend that many will find exhilarating. It's as if Russell Watson, Mario Frangoulis, Josh Groban, and Andrea Bocelli united to form a classical-crossover dream team. Of course, one listener's delight is another's schmaltz, and the largely sentimental, Vegas-ready numbers here will change no one's point of view on the joys or otherwise of "popera." But those whose CD collections have grown apace with the rapid rise of crossover in recent years will deem the gifted hunks of Il Divo wholly irresistible.
All Music Guide - James Christopher Monger
International classical crossover quartet Il Divo didn't start out in the garage practicing their exceptionally fluid tenors among the din of outraged neighbors and summer construction crews; rather, they were hunted by producers for two years like wild game in their native lands and herded into the studio, where they were sculpted into a machine of such smoldering European romanticism that the world would have no choice but to rip their very hearts out upon first listen. Sound overly dramatic? You bet, which is why Il Divo's self-titled debut depends entirely on one's opinion of Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On." Extremely wealthy producers Per Magnusson and David Krueger Backstreet Boys, along with Steve Mac Charlotte Church have created the Three Tenors -- in this case four -- for the next generation, and if the first single, a cover of Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart," is any indication, all involved should see their stock rise. American tenor David Miller, French heartthrob Sébastien Izambard, Swiss tenor Urs Buhler, and Spanish baritone Carlos Marin tackle standards like "My Way" and "Unchained Melody" with an expert precision and pomp -- the latter is sung in Italian -- that aptly conveys their obvious talents. An achingly beautiful arrangement of "Gabriel's Oboe" -- known here as "Nella Fantasia" -- from Ennio Morricone's score for The Mission is sweeping and grand, but there is no denying the sheer Monkees/Menudo/American Idol consumerism of the whole venture -- this is Idol "Grinch" Simon Cowell's baby. Il Divo may only last long enough to rid the world of a few billion dollars -- probably on one tour alone -- but there's no doubt that the hands that hold the strings above them are already in the war room planning their next kill.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

anything they do is a work of art

I found them by accident and I am forever grateful. My mother, 85 yrs old, loves this group. Although she doesn't understand the various languages they sing, she is mesmerized just like I am. Some of their work is invigorating and stimulating, other is emotional, others relaxing/soothing. They have it and do it all.

    Il Divo

A friend sent me an e-mail containing Il Divo's version of Amazing Grace which prompted me to order the CD. After listening to the one I received, I proceeded to order 2 more of their recordings and look forward to another in the future. These are four magnificient voices which blend together in a beautiful way.

    It's mom's cup of tea...

My mother has listened to this cd over and over and over again. It was well worth the money. Granted, the price was a little higher than other stores, but the membership discount helped bring it down to the average price. Plus, it was in stock at B & N after Oprah's premier when other retail stores were out.

They are helping to complete my music library

Il Divo is the most beautiful music that I have heard in a long time. Their harmonizing is perfect! Until I first heard them, I was always hoping for a group to sing harmony not only in classical music but also in the songs familiar to me from the past. This is it! I wish they would do songs of Mario Lanza.

WOW - What a breath of fresh Air - Brilliant

I have not heard great music of this type for years. I stopped listening to the radio when my Husband died. Just happened to be going thru the TV Guide one evening and our PBS station had IL Divo on and I caught the last part of a song and I was Hooked on All their music. So glad Simon Cowell found these young men. They are the best.

    A Classical Fan

Even though I'm unable to understand the words I could not be more Pleased with their combined voices. I do WISH that they would put out an album sung in english very soon.

    Reduces me to tears

I heard them first on Goodmorning America, I think. I immediately ordered a CD for myself and one for each of my four childres-grown adults. You can understand why "Mama" reduces me to tears. Such beautiful voices and such perfect pitch...they blend together without fault. I listened to them continually. I found that my kids loved them also, because they had them in their cars to hear on the way to work, etc. Thanks for this wonderful group.

There still is romance and passion!!!!!

Once you hear them sing you have to listen to them over and over again. Some of the songs, no matter how many times I hear them, bring me to tears. Il Divo is definitely romance, sex and passion in music! And they don't look so bad either! I love the baritone of Carlos and the suaveness of Sebastien. If you can't listen with someone you love --- take a romance book, glass of wine. Keep the music coming!

    The Best Voices Out There

Il Divos' voices are mind blowing. David Miller's Tenor and harmonizing is heart wrenching and beautiful at the same time. Carlos Marin's Baritone and range is amazing and refreshing. Urs Buhler's voice is unique and indescribable sort of a Steve Perry (from Journey) voice where it sounds great it doesn't matter what type of voice he has. Sebastien Izambard has a beautiful tenor that is more pop but still a perfect match with the three classically trained operatic singers. You won't be disappointed if you pick this up and are looking for true talent and voices.

    Heartstopping!

Beautiful and moving! The voices of these young men blend together and produce such a heavenly sound. My spirit soars, and I am moved nearly to tears. It is so wonderful that more and more people are becoming interested in this type of music. I'm so grateful that I was raised to appreciate all music.

    il divo is great!!!

This is a great CD! The voices and music are very beautiful and i was impressed by all the songs. My favorite songs were "Unbreak my Heart" and "Passera." I think each member is very talented and even though they would sound better individually, they still made a very good CD that i would definitely recommend to all!

It's as if they are singing only to you!

I had never heard of Il Divo until my aunt played the cd in her car. I fell in love and bought it the very next day. I love all the songs and play it over and over again in my car, in my computer, and every chance I get. I love the song "Passera" even though I don't understand a word of it and I think Sebastian is gorgeous!! I can't wait until they come to my area to perform.

    Questo gruppo è fantastico!

All my friends are tiring of hearing me rave about the CD. I listen every chance I get. I'm not a fan of opera but I do appreciate trained voices. As an aspiring student of Italian, I'm having fun translating the lyrics of those songs in Italian. I'm looking forward to the next CD Buona fortuna Il Divo!

    IL DIVO

Until last Friday night during the Daytime Emmy Awards I had never heard of IL DIVO but once I heard their Italian version of Unchained Melody I became hooked. They have a new fan for life. LIA78
