Overview

Smart and devilishly funny, here's a book to celebrate kids who know what they like and don't like, and aren't afraid to show it! Auntie wants a smile from Baby, but none of her attempts are working. She's trying harder and harder and, to Baby's horror, harder still-in clever, guffaw-worthy illustrations that almost need no text. Is there anything she can do to bring about a smile?

This irreverent, silly book was originally published as Smile for Auntie in the 1970s. With its ...

This irreverent, silly book was originally published as Smile for Auntie in the 1970s. With its bold, saucy drawings and ageless depiction of childhood honesty and independence (not to mention adult neediness!), it is just as fresh and satisfying today. If you've ever had your cheeks pinched, you'll hoot as Baby gets the last laugh. And with its appealingly small size and low price, this just might be the perfect valentine for that loved one with an offbeat sense of humor.

Auntie tries everything she can think of to make the baby smile.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Several titles make a comeback this winter. In the paper-over-board reissue of the 1976 title I'll Give You Kisses by Diane Paterson (originally published as Smile for Auntie), dumpy meets frumpy (though it's difficult to say which is which). Auntie will try anything to get a dough-eyed baby to crack a smile; she tries singing, dancing and tickling. Paterson's zany pictures of the corpulent, well-intentioned ogre of an aunt make it easy to understand the baby's growing agitation-and what finally wins a smile. Children's Literature
On one side of these small pages looms a formidable-looking Auntie, leaning toward the apprehensive baby on the other side. "Smile for Auntie," she demands. She tries a song, she tries a dance, she tries a grotesque face. Baby isn't interested. She stands on her head, she jumps. She offers ice cream, toys, kisses, tickles; no smile is forthcoming, until she threatens to go away and never come back. That exit finally brings the smile. What a great, and funny look at the baby's point of view for a change! And what a way to see ourselves as foolish adults. A deft pen-and-ink line used as sparingly as the hand-lettered text creates the many poses of Auntie as well as the stoic baby who demonstrates only anxiety. Tints of color fill inside the lines for greater solidity. The caricatures are humorous, including only necessary details. Originally published as Smile for Auntie. 2003 (orig.1976), Dial Books for Young Readers/Penguin Young Readers Group, Ages 6 to Adult.
