Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
With this title Burford launches its new "Classics of War" line. Moss here tells the remarkable story of how he and a fellow British commando infiltrated a Nazi stronghold in Crete, kidnapped a German general, and spirited him back to Egypt. Though based on fact, this could rival any best-selling espionage novel.

A hidden story that no one is talking about

This book really recounts an exceptional hidden story. It details a successful British commando operation into Crete to kidnap the German commander of the feared Sevastopol Division in 1944.I really liked the whole tone of the book. If you have not read it, you are missing a great story told in first person by W. Stanley Moss. The most amazing detail I was struck with was that after they captured General Kriepe, BBC Radio announced that they had done it and that they were still on the island. It took them more eight days to get him off the island and sprint him back to Cairo. The book moves a little slow at parts (after all it was written in 1950) but it is exciting to follow the whole story all the way through to the end. After reading it,I told friends about it and they could not believe it really happened. A group of no more than 15 commandos and partisans were able to capture a commander get him past 15,000 German troops on the Nazi stronghold. A really great World War II story!
