Issued in the U.K. by Motown on the heels of Johnson's late-'60s hit "I'll Pick a Rose for My Rose," a number one record in England. The record never did much in the States, nor did any of Johnson's releases on Motown's Gordy label. The company never issued this album in the States, and, for the most part, treated Johnson like an unwanted stepchild. Johnson's success came prior to his joining Motown; though he recorded in the company's studios, Berry Gordy, Jr. leased his singles to United Artists Records. It's apparent why U.K. soul freaks fell for these, since most have that four-on-the-four beat Motown-style that they loved dancing to in clubs. "I'll Pick a Rose for ...
