Overview

In a powerful and intimate memoir, Jackie Hance shares her story of unbearable loss, darkest despair, and—slowly, painfully, and miraculously—her cautious return to hope and love. Until the horrific car accident on New York’s Taconic State Parkway that took the lives of her three beloved young daughters, Jackie Hance was an ordinary Long Island mom, fulfilled by the joyful chaos of a household bustling with life and chatter and love. After the tragedy, she was “The Taconic Mom,” whose unimaginable loss embodied every parent’s worst nightmare. Suddenly, her lifelong Catholic faith no longer explained the world. Her marriage to her husband, Warren, was ravaged by wrenching grief and recrimination. Unable to cope with the unfathomable, she reinvented reality each night so that she awoke each morning having forgotten the heartbreaking facts: that Emma, age 8; Alyson, age 7; and Katie, age 5, were gone forever. They were killed in a minivan driven by their aunt, Jackie’s sister-in-law, Diane Schuler, while returning from a camping weekend on a sunny July morning. I’ll See You Again chronicles the day Jackie received the traumatizing phone call that defied all understanding, and the numbed and torturous events that followed—including the devastating medical findings that shattered Jackie to the core and shocked America. But this profoundly honest account is also the story of how a tight-knit community rallied around the Hances, providing the courage and strength for them to move forward. It’s a story of forgiveness, hope, and rebirth, as Jackie and Warren struggle to rediscover the possibility of joy by welcoming their fourth daughter, Kasey Rose Hance. The story that Jackie Hance shares for the first time will touch your heart and warm you to the power of love and hope.

I just finished this book today after starting this weekend, and I'm not sure what to think.
I do think Jackie Hance gave a gripping and heart-wrenching description of what can only be described as a parent's worst nightmare realized. However, like another reviewer, I found the book to lack some structure and although my heart broke for Jackie as a mother, I sometimes found myself having difficulty empathizing with her. Although she give him credit in the Epilogue (and occasionally through the book) her husband Warren has borne more than one man should be expected to--I felt so bad for him when reading some of the accounts, thinking how he did not have the opportunity to grieve their daughters for so long because he was trying to hold Jackie together.
I understand people deal with their family and their grief in their own way, but her misdirected anger toward him was a little much to read chapter after chapter.
That being said, I do believe that it gives parents the uncomfortable opportunity to ask "what if?" It certainly made me pause and think about all the little things my kids do that might aggravate me--and then I remind myself I still have my children.
Overall, I think a three-star rating is adequate for the book.

    Life-changing

Jackie's story inspires forgiveness, positivity, and love. It emphasizes the power of the human spirit and the love of family. I will never look at life the same way again after reading this beautiful and, yes, brutal book.

    Heartbreaking

Amazing! Jackie Hance give you a truly up close and personal account of what tragedy looks and feels like. Brutally honest and beautifully written. I hope to never go through such horrific grief, but they have proven there is life and tragedy.

    This book is just eh.

I'm also a grieving mother, only two years into my son being killed in a car accident. However I found Jackie to be full of herself, self absorbed, and very whiny.

I could not put the book down and I cried many times throughout. Of course she was a raving lunatic, who wouldn't be? My heart breaks for all involved. I commend you Jackie, for having the courage to share you and your husband's most painful story in memory of your beloved daughters. I can't even imagine how the Hance family must feel on an a daily basis and they will feel this way for the rest of their lives. Thank you for sharing your story. I will never forget your girls.

    Excellent

I couldn't put this book down. Though it's a very painful story, I have known people who have gone through similar tragedies and this story parallels what I observed from the people I know.

A realistic testimony to the power of faith and friendship.

This is a book that should touch the heart of any parent or grandparent, but will also demonstrate the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Others who have lost a child or children my be able to see their own feelings and problems reflected in the words of Jackie Hance.

    Excellent Book

I hesitated to buy this book as I was afraid it would simply be depressing. It is exremely well written. The mom discusses her battle with acceptance and depression, the impact on her marriage and the wonderful support of her friends. Just a good book and provides a great deal of respect for both parents and leaves the reader feeling we can deal when we must.
