This "Land of Liberty" series entry includes information about the state's geography, weather, history, government, economy, and people. Text is straightforward and informational, unmarred by italicized vocabulary (although there is a glossary), and current with today's newspapers. Featured are sidebars, maps, an almanac of statistics, a timeline of important events, famous quotes, trivia facts, a recipe that applies to the state's agricultural strengths, and reader-pleasing notes about pro sports. Sidebars include notes about Big Bluestem, the grass that covered the prairie, the Great Chicago Fire, Abraham Lincoln, and Ray Kroc who is the founder of McDonalds. Contemporary notes include a bit about the Chicago Stock Exchange, the Democratic Convention riots of 1968, and its role in bird flyways. Useful for report writers, the information is easily locatable, with an index, more suggested informational but not fiction-based reading, and one Internet site that is an omnibus location set up and updated by the publisher to key readers to useful sites with more information about the Prairie State. 2003, Capstone Press,

Gr 3-5-Each of these easy-to-read titles introduces a state; describes its land, climate, and types of wildlife; gives a brief history; outlines the government and politics; acquaints readers with basic economy and resources; and touches on the people and culture. Also included are two maps, one showing major cities and the other showing land features; a recipe; the state flag and seal; an almanac of facts; and a listing of places to write and visit. Clear, full-color or black-and-white captioned photographs are abundant, as are sidebars and quotes from famous residents. There is enough information in these books for report writers. Although the maps aren't particularly detailed, the information on state governments is solid. The "Hello U.S.A." series (Lerner) has better maps, including a product map, and covers land, history, people and economy, and the environment, and has excellent factual end matter. The "From Sea to Shining Sea" series (Children's) has more substance and may appeal to readers at the higher end of this age grouping.
