Overview

Marianne Williamson's bestselling A Return to Love ended with a prayer in which she asked God to help us "find our way home, from the pain to peace, from fear to love, from hell to Heaven." Now, in this stunning new collection of thoughts, prayers, and rites of passage, Marianne Williamson returns to prayer.

Prayer is practical, Williamson tells us. "To look to God is to look to the realm of consciousness that can deliver us from the pain of living." Illuminata brings prayer into our daily lives, with prayers on topics from releasing anger to finding forgiveness, from finding great love to achieving intimacy. There are prayers for couples, for parents, and for children; prayers to mend broken relationships and prayers to overcome obsessive and compulsive love. There are prayers to heal the soul, prayers to heal the body, and prayers for work and creativity.

Williamson also gives us prayers for the healing of America, including two prayers that have had powerful effects on audiences at her lectures: a prayer of amends on behalf of European Americans to African-Americans and one to Native Americans. How, Williamson asks, can we expect anyone to forgive when we have made no formal apology?

Another section includes rites of passage, ceremonies of light for the signal events in our lives: blessing of the newborn, coming of age, marriage, and death. There is also a ceremony of the elder, for moving into midlife, and a ceremony of divorce, in which a gentle transition is provided for both the couple and their children.

"Read my prayers or someone else's," Williamson says. "By all means, create your own." Illuminata is a way to bring prayer into practical use, creating a sweeter, more abundant life for yourself and the people you care for. "No conventional therapy," she says, "can release us from a deep and abiding psychic pain. Through prayer we find what we cannot find elsewhere: a peace that is not of this world."

I've bought this books 2 years ago, and only recently decided to read this one. It was my mistake, because book was very boring and sometimes I thought that author just begin to write about spirituality. I like begginers in this genre, but no Marianne Williamson. Maybe just because I compare this book with a crossing or the drop's history by Anatoliy Obraztsov. Maybe, if I compare Illuminata - A Return to Prayer with another book my review would be different...

    Great non-religious book on prayer

I bought this and then didn't really read it to start with. But then I got in a bad place emotionally, and found the perfect prayer to deal with my problem. Now I use the book almost daily. The prayers are written with great love and compassion, and the table of contents breaks them down into subjects/situations.

Allow for a Higher Power to guide you.....

......Then buy a copy of Marianne's book Illuminata. Marianne has a special gift for writing some of the most inspiriational material I have ever read. She has a deep sincerity for what she writes because she believes in the need for Love and support from a higher power. The words and prayers contained in this book help give meaning to those who are serious about being guided by the spirit in every aspect of their lives. The information and prayers shared in this book are written for all of us, not just those who have already have a deep prayer life. Come on, read this book. It "IS" worth every word and it will inspire you in one way or another.

I bought this book after going through a great tragedy in my life.  Unbelievably, despite a strict Christian upbringing, I had no clue how to really pray.  So every night in my grief and loneliness, I opened Illuminata and found the perfect prayer, the perfect words to bring me comfort and strength.  It altered my experience from one of despair to one of hope; this simple yet powerful act of surrendering to a higher power through prayer. These are decidedly beautiful words but so much more.  They come from an inspired heart and an illuminated spirit and can guide one out of the darkest night.  It is my most dog-eared, battered book, and my most beloved.
