Overview

"I don't do patrols, I don't go hunting, I just stick close to you. You live your life, I'll keep you safe," Tamani said, sweeping a lock of hair from her face. "Or die trying."

Laurel hasn't seen Tamani since she begged him to let her go last year. Though her heart still aches, Laurel is confident that David was the right choice.

But just as life returns to normal, Laurel realizes that a hidden enemy lies in wait. Once again, Laurel must turn to Tamani to protect and guide her, for the danger that now threatens Avalon is one that no faerie thought would ever be possible.

Editorial Reviews

Booklist
“A dramatic conclusion will leave readers anxious for the next installment.”
School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—In Spells (2010), the sequel to Wings (2009, both HarperTeen), faerie Laurel chose her human boyfriend David over Tamani, her faerie guardian, who then disappeared. Now Laurel's thrown when Tamani unexpectedly shows up at the start of her senior year, posing as a Scottish exchange student. Klea, the mysterious female troll hunter who saved Laurel from her evil troll nemesis in the previous book, turns up in town, too. She asks Laurel to look after a shy Japanese exchange student who isn't "exactly…human." Suspecting that Yuki's a faerie, Laurel is wary of both Klea and Yuki's motives since Yuki doesn't respond to Laurel's efforts at friendship and might even hate her. When Tamani befriends Yuki to gather information, Laurel can't help feeling jealous. There have been signs of trolls in the vicinity, but no actual sightings until they attack Laurel and her friends and then disappear through an invisible barrier. After David and Tamani come to blows over her, Laurel breaks off with both of them—but can't deny her attraction for Tamani. Everything comes to a climax at the winter dance, when they discover what Yuki really is and what she's capable of. Readers are left hanging just as the action gets exciting, guaranteeing another book in this romantic paranormal series.—Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trenton
Kirkus Reviews

The third in this four-leaf series wilts at the outset, with prose more clichéd than its predecessors, but perks up in the second half.

Laurel's back in her real-world hometown of Crescent City, Calif., trying to live a normal teenage life without pining for Avalon, her faerie homeland. Trolls are probably hunting her, but they don't attack often, so Laurel's biggest quandary in this installment is deciding between—chime in, paranormal romance fans!—the two dreamy boys who adore her. Steadfast David is human, while steamy Tamani is Lauren's personal faerie guardian; they're equally loyal and equally smitten. Daily life becomes precarious when Klea, a tough special-ops fighter who frequently saves Laurel's life but emanates untrustworthiness, asks Laurel to befriend Yuki, an exchange student who's obviously hiding things. As a plant (in this world, faeries are biologically plants), Laurel works with powders and beakers and pestles trying to determine Yuki's secret—is Yuki a faerie too? Pike's third-person narration uses Tamani's perspective sometimes, conveniently showing readers scenes behind Laurel's back. It's unclear how Laurel and Tamani shift from knowing that Yuki and Klea's motivations are unknown, to assuming they comprehend who Yuki and Klea really are (they have no evidence), but those unfounded assumptions underlie the climax's surprise.

Fans will revel in the idealized characterizations, breathless abstinence romance, lurking danger and newly explicit Arthurian parallels. (Paranormal romance. 12 & up)

    Seriously??

I read the book in a day. It did drag in some areas but was a really good read. I must say that im a little dissapointed as this is only half a book. And now we have to wait how long for a follow up? We only end up with one answer and an anticlimatic ending. And pay another 9.99 to finish. I feel a bit let down by the author.

    To Be Continued...

These books are really entertaining and fun, but are terribly non-conclusive. I found it hard to get back into the story because there was such a long wait between book releases. I guess I just didn't enjoy it as much as I could have. My recommendation is that if you haven't started the series yet, wait until they are all written. If you liked this series, you might also like the "Wicked Lovely" series by Melissa Marr, "Nightshade" by Andrea Cremer, and "I am Number Four" by Pittacus Lore.

    A MUST read....

I LOVE this series.....I got the first book, Wings for free & was immediately hooked! The cliffhanger ending didn't bother me so much, I know there will be another great book to follow & can't wait until it comes out! I know a lot of people are Team Tamani but I have to say he's a bit over the top & its kind of annoying....chances are she will be with him in the end but I'm still a Team David fan!! Great book!

    An Annoying Love Triangle

Firstly, this book ends on a huge cliffhanger, which bothered me, but after reading Pike's defense (the last book will only span only a few days), I could understand why. I could accept that.

What really bothered me about this book was the love triangle. It was in the rest of the books, and I actually enjoyed it, but this one, it really felt like Pike was intentionally manipulating it. Sure, she's the writer, so she's always manipulating it how she wants, but when it's intentional that she's trying to steer the whole thing in another direction, I have to roll my eyes. It's even worse how quickly the aftermath is cleaned up. It's less messy to kill off a character so that the girl could be with the right guy than it is for the two guys to wage war over her and then after everybody loses, to act like friends.

Without all that drama, I would've enjoyed this book much more. I hope Pike doesn't continue outdrawing this love triangle in the next book. I like David and Tamani (though Tamani much less after this book) but I'd rather have one of them killed off in the first chapter of the next book so that Laurel won't continue with this indecisive drivel.

Besides that, I enjoyed the rest of the book. Unfortunately, that triangle takes a large chunk of it.

    Amazing!

I loved it! Tamani is my favorite, he sounds so cute. The beginning is a little slow but once you hit the middle you cant stop reading! I was so surprised at the ending! Really well written, it had me guessing throughout the whole book. I cant wait for the next one to come out! Anyone know when it does?

    GREAT series

I have thought that this is a good series since the first book, Wings, and it just keeps getting better with each book. In Illusions, we get a lot more of Tamani which is a GREAT thing, in my opinion. Tamani is still protecting Laurel but this time it is from an unknown threat. Trolls are also still lurking but something has changed which causes the faeries to feel vulnerable. I highly recommend this series to anyone that likes series with adventure, a little suspense, and of course love.

Each book in this series adds a little more to the mythology. In book 1, we learned about fairies and their biology. In book 2, we learned about where the fairies live and their culture. In this book we got to learn a lot about the history of the fairies with some fun references to Shakespeare and King Arthur.

There’s a lot of mystery and intrigue going on about a new character and what their motives are that I can tell is building up to a great finale. In addition to that there’s some love triangle drama/angst/fun – whatever you want to call it (I think it’s fun, romantic and just a little bittersweet). Laurel insists it’s not fun to have guys fight over her, but I agree with Laurel’s mom – it seems fun. At least to watch anyway. We get to see things from Tamani’s perspective for the first time and it just makes me like him all the more. The romance completely swept me away. At the end, I was left with this feeling that this whole thing isn’t going to end well. I hope I’m wrong and that Aprilynne surprises me with the ending in the last book. I’m off to read it and I’m so excited!

    It's ok

This is not one of my favorites. I read the first one and loved it. A year or two later I read the 2nd and 3rd ones and loved them too. I've read them a few times since and each time I like them a little less. Laurel seems to along unaturally well with her parents. One thing that annoys me alot is that Laurel gets jelous of Yuki when Tamini flirts with her. She needs to decide if she likes Tamini or David better (I personally perfer David). I don't think David gets unnessisarily jealous of David at all. I do think Laurel should spend more time with Chealsy. And it ends adrubtly also. This is my personal opinion. You may love though. I'm 12 but I usually read that are for older ages.

Another great book in the Laurel series. I started out reading bpook one because my daughter had it to read for an assignment in school. I liked it so much I read the following 2 books. I have always loved fairies since I was a little girl. It was nice to get away in a book that blends fantasy with real world.
