Library Journal

This is a brief and generally competent dictionary of photographic terms by a writer/editor and a photo retoucher that attempts, in 5000 entries, to cover "every aspect of photography, past and present." Unfortunately, most of the entries are too short, e.g., "PIXAR format" is described as a "file format designed for images to be used on PIXAR computers," with no further description of the format, what PIXAR might stand for, or what a PIXAR computer is used for. The cover boasts "Discussions of the genres of photography, from aerial photography to underwater imaging," but the "discussions" consist of one sentence on aerial photography and two on underwater imaging. John G. Blair's recently released The Glossary of Digital Photography is far more useful.
