Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Illustrated it is. A dictionary, not exactly. Only the glossary, index, and bibliography are alphabetically arranged. Instead, much like Religions of the World (Facts on File, 1997), this is an illustrated guide. The introduction defines religion, identifies common themes (foundational stories, ethics) and concepts (sacred places, ritual), and discusses the general relationship between religion and society. Aside from two chapters on ancient and primal religions and one on "new religions," the bulk of the book covers major world religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Each chapter provides brief entries on important aspects of each tradition. The entries are cross-referenced by bold-faced words in the text and a See Also box on almost every other page. Well researched and written, this guide may be an alternative for school, public, and academic libraries that don't have Religions of the World.--Craig W. Beard, Univ. of Alabama at Birmingham Lib. Text and a unique selection of photographs of places of worship, ceremonies, icons, and scriptures from around the world provide a visual guide to about 15 key world religions, from the beliefs of the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Greece to present-day living religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Organized chronologically, it begins with a short introduction that analyzes the nature of religion and looks at common themes, shared beliefs, conflicts, and benefits. The nine main sections each focus on a particular religion or religious tradition, with cross- references to facilitate comparisons. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

    Not just for young adults

As a teacher of freshmen and sophomores in college, I recommend this illustrated dictionary of world religions. I am using it in a Humanities Intro course. It works in a liberal arts class whether high school or college. Clearly written and well-organized, the variety is excellent.
