Editorial Reviews

VOYA
A solid addition to the collection of books dealing with ancient Egypt, this title provides an unusual index that makes the encyclopedia work like a chapter book. By using one of the eleven different "trails" that are listed at the beginning of the book, readers are provided with a list of entries that discuss a particular aspect of ancient Egyptian life. The trail for "Leisure," for instance, leads readers to the entries on Dance, Festivals, Music, and Sports. Entries related to each trail are designated by a particular symbol, making them easy to categorize and find. A more complete index is available at the back of the book. Both the trails and the index make the book useful for research. Illustrations and color photos of Egyptian artifacts enhance the text, and words that have individual entries are highlighted in boldface. Information in this easy-to-use reference is reliable and comprehensible. Distinctions between the different dynastic periods and kingdoms are clear, and the rulers are portrayed accurately, with allusions to the incestuous practices and religious beliefs of the time. The scientific and mathematical achievements of the Egyptians are not overlooked. A time line would have enhanced the book, but overall the accessible information, understandable language, and graphical intensity make this title a worthwhile purchase for use by middle school and older students. Although the presentation looks young, the information presented is sound and useful for all students. 1999, Peter Bedrick, 176p, Index, Illus., Photos, Maps, Charts, PLB, Ages 12 to 18.
