Taylor (The Religious Dimensions of Confucianism; East Asian religion & philosophy, Columbia Univ.) and Choy (comparative literature & humanities, Univ. of Colorado at Boulder) have packed a great deal of information on Confucianism into this two-volume set, all with the benefit of a straightforward and intuitive layout. Volume 1 contains a helpful subject breakdown in which entries are categorized thematically under such headings as "Literature," "Language and Symbols," and "Dynasties"; the succinct, 2000-plus A-to-Z entries offer abundant cross references in bold type; and bibliographic citations accompany some entries (only works in English appear here; for works in Chinese, readers must turn to the bibliography at the end of Volume 2). Black-and-white photos, drawings of relevant historical characters, maps, and charts simply but clearly illustrate the text. The appendixes, which assume a fair amount of knowledge about Eastern philosophy and Confucianism, include a chronology of the Chinese dynasties, a glossary of Chinese characters transliterated in accordance with the Pinyn and Wade-Giles systems, and a full bibliography. Bottom Line Owing to the large bibliography and in-text citations, this encyclopedia would be most at home in a scholarly setting as a supplement to other references on Eastern religion and philosophy.
