    This is History, not Politics.

Here in the U.S. we often accept a British point of view without question since we read our history in English. We can read all about "how things were" in the 17th century in English; But, is that the way things really were? Both U.S. and British historians often emphasize "who Ruled a place", not who lived there. This history is mindful of who is living there now and what the history of those people living there was. It is not like those misleading histories that would have you believe that The Ottoman Empire had any legitimate presence in Eastern Europe. Ottoman rule was rejected. This is a history agreed upon by historians who live in Europe today. Individual National histories are often in conflict because the individual countries were in conflict through the ages. This is the history they can agree upon today. This is the point of view of the survivors.

A Must-read for Americans Living in (or Planning to Visit) Europe

This book has given a great perspective on the overall history of Europe. The textbook style format makes it easy to read in large doses or in small chucks, whichever you have time for. The illustrations, maps, and quotations are wonderful - informative enough to stand on their own (and the photographs are simply beautiful - worth the price of the book themselves). A definite must-read for those interested in inter-related histories.

    A Great Read!

This is a highly enlightening book. It spans from prehistoric Europe to the European Union, highlighting all the important historical events, people, and ages. I truly enjoyed reading this book, and learned so much about Europe, both about the individual states within this great continent, and about Europe as a whole.
