Description: Using a regional approach, this text describes a substantial number of common and less common orthopedic tests. It is a second edition of a book that was first released in 1994. In addition to discussing orthopedic tests, local anatomy is also described, and the text is laced with orthopedic gamuts, whcih present a spectrum of facts for assessing orthopedic disease.
Purpose: The purpose is to update and expand upon the first editio, by increasing the information on disease assessment, adding more illustrations and creating orthopedic gamuts. These are worthy objectives which taken together make a book that was already a strong one even better. The text goes far in doing exactly what the author set out to do, which is to present in one text a comprehensive overview of orthopedic tests that the clinician may use.
Audience: This will find its best use among the student body of those studying chiropractic, osteopathy, or medical orthopedics. Though the author is a chiropractic physician, the themes and topics are universal to all three disciplines. The text will also serve as a great resource for the practitioner in each of these fields. The author is well known within the chiropractic profession as a leader in orthopedics.
Features: The text is largely devoted to a regional discussion of orthopedic tests, i.e. neck, elbow, shoulder, etc. Each chapter has the same format: an index of tests, set of axioms, anatomy, unique features, orthopedic gamuts, and tests. Each area is thoroughly covered. No one area stands out; they are all good. There are two appendixes: one listing tests alphabetically and anatomically and one listing tests according to patient position.
Assessment: Dr. Evans' first edition was a superb textbook that was well received in the chiropractic profession. This new edition builds upon the substantial base of the first, and uses a greater amount of evidence from the literature in doing so. There are areas of the text that are useful for critical thinking and there are numerous flowcharts and algorithms. This is a much more comprehensive text compared to the first edition, and that was pretty comprehensive itself. I would highly recommend getting it to replace the first edition.
