Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Dana J Lawrence, DC, MMedEd, MA (Palmer College of Chiropractic)
Description: This third edition of a standard in the field provides a comprehensive overview of the diagnostic procedures necessary to properly assess the neuromusculoskeletal system using a regional approach. An accompanying DVD demonstrates a wide range of procedures discussed in the book.
Purpose: It is designed to provide clinicians at all levels of training and experience information on current methods for assessment of the neuromusculoskeletal system. This is sorely needed, given the emphasis on evidence-based practice. This new edition is an enhancement of an already effective book.
Audience: This will be used by both those in training and those in practice. As a teaching manual, there is no better. As a reference for a practicing clinician, it is the most comprehensive compendium of information I am aware of. The author is a leading clinician in the chiropractic profession, long recognized for his expertise in orthopedic physical diagnostic procedures.
Features: Two chapters dedicated to basic assessment principles and procedures begin the book before moving into a regional approach to diagnosis. The organization for each chapter follows a pattern: axioms, followed by an introduction, orthopedic gamuts, motion palpation, then imaging and orthopedic tests. Each section has ample illustrations to support the text, and the DVD demonstrates how to perform many of the procedures. The book is printed on glossy paper with color illustrations.
Assessment: This is an essential purchase. I find it easy to use, comprehensive, thorough, and well organized. It has a depth of coverage few books can match. This edition enhances the past versions, and will fit in well in an evidence-based world. While authored by a chiropractic physician, I see it being useful in all healthcare fields. I highly recommend it.
