Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
This timeline addresses how people have traveled and how goods have been transported throughout history, from canoes in 6300 BC to the Airbus in 2005. Numerous means of transportation are addressed including canoes, animals, trains, cars, and airplanes. The book is divided into sections rather than chapters. Each section covers a definitive historical period, and includes relevant facts of the era and cartoon-like illustrations. The first section is aptly titled "Ancient Times," and followed by subsequent time periods. An activity, "Build Your Own Timeline," provides instructions for making a timeline of the history of flight beginning with the Wright Brothers success at Kitty Hawk in 1903, and ending with today. A glossary defines relevant terms. "To Learn More" lists books and Internet sites which provide more information on the subject. An index allows easy navigation through the text. The book is part of the "An Illustrated Timeline" Series which includes: An Illustrated Timeline of Inventions and Inventors, An Illustrated Timeline of Space Exploration, An Illustrated Timeline of U.S. States, An Illustrated Timeline of Dinosaurs, and An Illustrated Timeline of U.S. Presidents, This series provides excellent supplemental information to a history curriculum. Meet the Author

Eldon's first career was as a Seattle policeman, from which he gleaned a collection of vintage mug shots that have inspired many of his more outrageous characters. Following a lifelong love of drawing, he quit his police work and enrolled in the San Francisco Academy of Art. From there, his original line-and-wash cartoons have now evolved into computer-generated illustration using Fractal Painter and Photoshop. Step-by-Step Electronic Design featured his procedure for creating richly detailed mock-historic portraits. He and his wife Sally live in northern California, and he still loves to ride his motorcycle whenever he can.
