Lovers of illustrated tales of chivalry won't want to miss this showcase from Walter Crane's lavishly illustrated six-volume edition of 'The Faerie Queene.' Spenser's poetic romance blends knightly adventures like those of King Arthur's Round Table with characters from classical mythology, and with vivid symbolism like that in Italian Renaissance paintings. In bringing Spenser's world to pictorial life, Crane's achievement is unmatched. Note, however, that there is a certain amount of mildly provocative nudity here--unlike other illustrations for tales of chivalry, or Crane's own fairy-tale illustrations for that matter, these were not created with a juvenile audience in mind. Was this review helpful?
