Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lee A. Snodgrass
A small girl with a big imagination and a cooperative sheepdog named Fred explore the limits of a child's imagination in this appealing picture book for the preschool set. The two travel on safari, ride an elephant in India, and swim in the depths of the ocean, all while remaining in their own home. Perfect for an only child who must frequently use pets and props as playmates. Lacombe uses rhythmic, rhyming text to move the book along. The colorful paper collage illustrations are sure to please. 1996 (orig.

PreS-K-With the help of her dog, Fred, a little girl pretends to be many things. When the animal is harnessed by a blanket to a chair, the child at the reins becomes a jolly farmer. When she balances a doll on Fred's back, he becomes an elephant carrying a princess. When he drifts off for a nap, she becomes a wildlife ranger keeping a cautious eye on the sleeping ``lion.'' In the end, the game enters scary territory, as Little Red Riding Hood prepares to take granny a treat. When granny shows her toothy grin (payback for the playtime indignities of canines everywhere), the little girl decides she'd rather stay home and play-``with Fred!'' Cheerful paper-collage illustrations bring an adorable heroine and her hugable sidekick to life. The large-print, rhyming text, with its perfect proportion of words to art, makes this book an ideal choice for young children.-Lisa S. A small girl and her ever-patient dog, Fred, engage in a lively game of make-believe that allows the pair to become a farmer with a horse and cart, a princess riding on an elephant, a wildlife ranger and a lion, a deep-sea diver and a dolphin, and Red Riding Hood and the wolf. The paper collage artwork is a highlight, containing vibrant hues and exhibiting a simplicity of design that should appeal to young audiences. Lacome introduces each fantasy in a double-page illustration that shows the child and her dog playing against a white background. The following page-and-a-half spread depicts the fantasy that she imagines. Brief, rhyming text adds to the book's appeal, making this a great selection for preschool story hours, especially when paired with an imaginative participatory selection, such as Rosen's "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" (1989).
