Overview

"Being a kid is supposed to be the funnest time in life, but when cancer is part of childhood, life may seem overwhelming." Over 600,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer each year, leaving friends, classmates, family members as well as the patient confused and scared. Most often, parents are left with the overwhelming burden of explaining the diagnosis.
I'm a Kid Living with Cancer takes the fear out of explaining cancer to a child. If offers a sense of comfort and optimism from knowing what to expect, giving the facts about cancer in an honest but gentle manner, at a child's level of understanding.
Illustrations fill the pages with warmth and joy, showing a young boy facing cancer with logic and determination. He explains how an out of control cell forms a tumor, how a blood test is done, and what X-rays, CT Scans, and MRI's are for. Opportunities to wear silly hats, do schoolwork at home, and make new friends at the hospital are an essential part of the book.

I am thoroughly impressed with the authors ability to inform and educate on this topic. The illustrations were adorable and I know that children will be able to relate easily to the book. I would love to see a series of these books that delve into more specific types of cancer.

I would suggest this book to others who have young family members who have been diagnosed with cancer, have canceer or siblings who are experiencing cancer in the family. It doesn't matter what age the person is the books gives a real picture of what to expect and answers questions that they may have but are to afraid to ask the doctor.

This book is compassionate, down-to-earth, and informative. This book is invaluable in its ability to provide comfort and information to parents and children dealing with a diagnosis cancer. It is well written and takes the mystery out of what a child (and parents) can expect to encounter during treatment. Written from a child's point of view, this book is sure to ease a child's heart and mind. The illustrations are well-done with lots of information presented in a simple, non-threatening way. I HIGHLY recommend this book and believe it will ease the suffering of so many people. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series...

Despite the unpleasantness of the topic, I learned so much about cancer, and what the kids go through. The book is honest about everything, but also encouraging, and the illustrations are great for young kids who may not understand some of the words. Being educated about what to expect is vital! This book is perfect for school classrooms and would really benefit a kid who was just diagnosed with cancer.
