Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Wendy Pollock-Gilson
Love and friendship win in this story which is a mix of Sleeping Beauty and the story of Persephone. King Jared and Queen Estela throw a party in honor of their daughter Lily's birth, but they forget to invite the sorcerer, Maxum. As a punishment for their neglect, Lily must go through the Ring of Fire to live in Maxum's cold land for part of each year. Lily warms Maxum's cold heart with her friendship and he allows her to return to her parents, although she promises to visit him often. The illustrations are exquisite in their detail and charm. This book would be a good addition to units on fairy tales.
Children's Literature - Carol Raker Collins
In this expanded version of the traditional song, the little teapot shares his dreams with two children as he waits on the stove for someone to make tea. His imaginary escapades include a boat ride in China, a bullfight in Mexico, a space outing, a trip to the opera, a pirate ship ride, a foxhunt, and a jungle hide and seek game. The cute teapot is very versatile in all these exploits. For example, his spout becomes a fishing rod on the Chinese boat, an orchestral horn at the opera, and a trumpet on the foxhunt. The story ends with a tea party for all of the children's family and friends (including some they met on their trips--the fox and an alien). The illustrations are cheerful. Even the back to back two-page spreads in the jungle show smiling snakes and lizards. The watercolors use the entire palette from a particularly attractive pink, yellow, and green kite to a brown bull frolicking into a red cape in a red-rimmed arena. The musical score and adapted lyrics are included in the back of the book. This would be quite enjoyable as a parent and child sing-a-long. 1999 (orig.

We had this book and CD in our preschool classroom, and I don't know who enjoyed it more. It was a very creative and entertaining story with delightful illustrations. I recommend this book and author to all of my friends who have children, and will have it in my collection when I have children.

My three year old loves this story! We read this book almost everynight. He also loves Itsy Bitsy Spider by the same author.

My 16 month old daugher loves this book. She loves when I sing the story to her instead of just reading it and is captivated by the illustrations as well. The story is based on a teapot who lives in a home with children. He takes then on dreamy adventures to China, Mexico, a spaceship, the opera, a pirate ship, a fox hunt and the jungle.

Before I even opened the book, I was impressed by the clear plastic printed cover which made the book look unique and impressive. The illustrations show a lot of cheerfulness, and being able to sing the entire story to the musical tune is a fun change to nightly reading.

This is a wonderful alternative to reading bedtime stories. I can sing the nursery rhymes with my child. The story takes us on a magical journey to faraway places. My daughter now adds her book verses when she sings her nursery rhymes during the day.
