I'm Every Woman

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Roberta Penn
Yes, roots blues guitarist and singer Rory Block covers Chaka Khan’s breakout hit on I’m Every Woman, but her version of the title tune sounds neither like Khan’s nor Whitney Houston’s. It has strings and big production, but Block approaches the vocals with the same raw power she pumps into her folkier outings. And the title cut is an exception. Most of the album is a revamping of songs from an earlier soul era. She covers Al Green’s “Tired of Being Alone” much as he did, updates Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “Ain’t Nothing like the Real Thing” in a duet with Keb’ ‘Mo, and rocks out on the Ann Peebles signature tune “I Feel like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.” For those...

Block’s son Jordan Block Valdina accompanies her on the gospel song “Ain’t No Grave Can Hold My Body Down,” and Reverend Herb Sheldon does some preaching on Block’s version of “Hold On/Change Is Coming.” Yes, I’m Every Womanis all over the place, but when you’ve got a loyal following like Block does, taking chances is one of the privileges.
