In this English/Spanish flip book, a green-eyed girl and a pointy-nosed boy revel in the traits and activities that they share with their mother and father, and in the background a grandmother and grandfather. Like her mom, the unnamed girl has long hair, wrinkles her forehead when angry, sneezes loudly, loves dressing up and dancing to music, and draws pictures on the letters she sends to family and friends. Like his dad, the unnamed boy has long legs, sleeps face down, wakes up early, plays soccer, and loves reading, sometimes about faraway places. Near the flip point, each parent hands the child a mirror and says that s/he "can see our whole family on my face." In his first picture book, Hispanic newscaster Jorge Ramos has created a bilingual Everyfamily. Akemi Gutierrez's warm and playful illustrations echo the symmetry of the straightforward text and celebrate the happy rituals of suburbia—gardening, raking leaves, walking the dog—with no "ethnic" markers other than this lookalike family's black hair. Read aloud, I'm Just Like can spark discussion, inviting small children to explore their biological and cultural inheritance. Teachers in diverse settings may want to pair it with another book that honors difference within a family, especially the experience of adopted children who bear no physical resemblance to their parents and siblings. Once children begin to become aware of their family relationships, it is comforting to look for the ways in which they are like their parents and other relatives. Ramos has addressed this idea in a book that is divided into two parts; children can read about either a girl and her mom or turn it over and meet a father/son pair. The examples of similarities are simple and broad (a furrow in the brow, liking to play soccer), but they will help children draw parallels in their own families. Each straightforward sentence is presented in both English and Spanish. Gutiérrez's cartoon illustrations are friendly, warm, and energetic. A quirky dog appears on most spreads, and its antics add humor to the illustrations. The page instructing youngsters to flip the volume over shows the family members holding hands in a circle, underscoring their love and unity. "Who do I look like?" That's the age-old question a brother and sister ask their parents in this seemingly simple bilingual story. Each page is an observation of familial similarities from the genetic, like eye color and nose shape, to the habitual, like milk mustaches and doodling. But there's a twist: Ramos divides his story in half along gender lines. Begin at one end, and it's the daughter's perspective; with mom, she plants a flower garden and plays dress-up. Begin at the other end, and it's the boy's; together, father and son play soccer and read bedtime books about "far away places." Although a nice rhythm results from the parallel story lines, the back-to-back design interrupts and may confuse the reader. Still, Ramos's message-that the love of the family means no child is alone-is poignant and heartfelt. Gutierrez's gentle palette and controlled washes are a perfect match for this loving story, and young readers will be drawn to the large geometric shapes and the warm, friendly faces of the family. An age-appropriate story that may spark discussion. (Picture book. 3-5)
