    Creative, funny, touching

Normally I don't "do" celebrity biographies - my practical side doesn't have much interest in over indulgence and whining. I came across I'm Not Dead .... Yet while on vacation and my inner 13 year old squealed "OMG it's Robby Benson!" But after reading the description, and then the book, it was very clear this wasn't about the greatness of a celebrity but about the power and soul of a man who has struggled his entire life to acheive his dreams....all while struggled for every breath.
The witty and straight forward way he shares his experience with multiple open heart surgeries is a must read not only for fans, but for anyone undergoing the surgery, family members, and health care professionals.
    Beautiful, witty, soulful book.

What a wonderful love and survival story!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this book but it's one of the most moving biographies I've ever read. Robby shares not only his amazing struggle to live but his amazing love of Karla and his family. It's a real testament to what wanting something bad enough can mean and how Robby overcame so much to survive - not only in show business but in life. I highly recommend this book.

This was such a great book! It was so open and honest. He shared, in such detail, his struggles and triumphs. I will read it over and over through the years.
However, I thought it in very poor taste, having the "embedded music," be merely a tool to get us to buy his songs on Amazon. That is why I, with a heavy heart, I had to give a four star rating.

I'm a huge Robby Benson geek to begin with, But I saw him do an interview on The View about 4 months ago. He was talking about this book, as soon as the interview was over I rushed and bought the book for my Kindle. This book totally reinforced why I was a fan, and gave me a new insight to the strength and surviving spirit that Robby possesses. He gives great detail into his life long heart defect, and how his stubbornness didn't allow him to address the issue until it was too late. Amazing story, I highly recommend this book!!!

    Actor/Director Robby Benson's book, I'M NOT DEAD...YET! is a med

Actor/Director Robby Benson's book, I'M NOT DEAD...YET! is a medical memoir of his four open-heart surgeries and the staggering effect these had on his life and the lives of his wife Karla, their beautiful children (daughter Lyric and son Zephyr), and on their families and friends. A prime goal of the book is to help heart patients, and those will need open-heart surgeries, to be better able to cope, by his sharing of his own experiences, with the many traumas and challenges that come with such treatment. The book is at times painful (and infuriating) to read, but it is always shot-through with this author's sparkling sense of hope, determination and incredible compassion. A medical memoir, true, and a fine one, but it is so very much more than that. To call it a medical memoir, and leave it at that, would be to do this wonderful book and it's incredibly creative and kindhearted author, a gross disservice. Robby Benson not only provides a riveting medical memoir (and guide for those about to endure such things in order to help them better avoid traps, pitfalls, dangers and - importantly - unnecessary terrible pain), but he also provides through it all a fascinating look at life as a lifelong Broadway and Hollywood actor, director, screenwriter, playwright, songwriter and, yes, College Professor...and takes the reader along for a look at life with the one magical woman, his lovely wife Karla DeVito, whom he has been steadffastly in love with, with not one iota loss of their original starry-eyed magic, for three and one half decades, and a look at the joys and challenges (but mostly joys) of raising their two beautiful children. In other words, this work is not only highly informative, at times upsetting, but it is also a wonderfully entertaining, sweet and romantic look at this family's challenging life "behind-the-scenes" -- just enough to make you feel that you have known and loved this family since your own childhood. This book, I do not exxagerate, is the finest non-fiction work I have had the honor of reading in at least 30 years. Were it not for the fact that I had to go to work as well as church and a host of other things, I honestly would have read this book through in one sitting. It's that captivating, enthralling and entertaining.
On a personal note, I was a teenager in the late 1970s, when Mr. Benson's films were wildly popular. I grew up seeing, and loving, his movies: LUCKY LADY (with Liza Minelli), ONE ON ONE with Annette O'Toole (of SMALLVILLE fame), JEREMY co-starring Glynnis O'Connor, ODE TO BILLY JOE (also co-starring Glynnis O'Connor) and many other films. I thought he was pretty darned terrific in those films. In them, and in brief interviews I saw, Robby Benson also came across as one exceptionally good human being. Unexpecrtedly, I met him recently (not in person, but 1 to 1 nonetheless) and I was delighted to discover that those earlier impressions of him as a person were not at all mistaken. Mr. Benson is one of the nicest persons I've ever "met" in my entire life. And I'M NOT DEAD...YET! is one of the best books that you will ever read, in yours. Give it the first 25 pages, and you won't want to put it down. Rate it on a scale of one to ten? An ELEVEN.
