Overview

"For the first time in my life, I didn't feel envy..."

Tess is the exact opposite of her beautiful, athletic sister. And that's okay. Kristina is the sporty one, Tess is the smart one, and they each have their place. Until Kristina is diagnosed with cancer. Suddenly Tess is the center of the popular crowd, everyone eager for updates. There are senior boys flirting with her. But, the smiles of her picture perfect family are cracking and her sister could be dying. Now Tess has to fill a new role: the strong one. Because if she doesn't hold it together, who will?

Janet Gurtler tests the bonds of sisterhood in this moving debut that readers of Jodi Picoult and Sarah Dessen will savor.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—It's hard for Tess not to be jealous of her older sister. Kristina is beautiful; she's popular and outgoing, with a promising volleyball career. When Kristina is diagnosed with an aggressive form of bone cancer and must undergo chemotherapy, their mother's desire to keep up appearances makes Tess's life even more painful. Her mother throws parties and goes shopping to avoid dealing with the reality of Kristina's illness. Her dad spends all of his time at work and her sister slips into depression. In the meantime, Tess is trying to keep up her grades and create a piece of artwork to submit to a contest that could lead to a scholarship to her dream school. Tess's transformation is subtle, believable, and satisfying. The author seamlessly develops complexity in all of the characters as they all respond differently to their grief. Tess's former best friend seems to gloat at Kristina's diagnosis, while the kids in the popular crowd, whom Tess had previously dismissed, reach out to Tess, and her former academic rival, Clark Trent, becomes her protector at school. Tess's journey is both rewarding and painful as she develops the courage to stand up to her parents to break them out of their denial and she begins to appreciate her own beauty and strength. This quick and heartbreaking read realistically shows how one person's illness affects an entire community.—Rachael Myers-Ricker, Horace Mann School, Bronx, NY
The Contemps
I devoured it...this story isn't about the girl in the spotlight. It's about the girl in the shadows, the one who's forced to find her way into the light to keep her family from totally self-desctructing. As much as it brought me to tears, I loved watching Tess struggle with her own questions, doubt, frustrations with her parents and their inability to accept and deal with this tragedy, the equal parts love/resentment/fear she feels toward her sister, and her tenuous but unwanted place in the spotlight at school. I'M NOT HER is, quite simply, a downright real story. - The Contemps
VOYA
Tess and her sister, Kristina, are exact opposites. Kristina is athletic and outgoing, the life of every party, and the belle of every ball. Tess is artistic and quiet, could not care less about parties, and has never even had a boyfriend. They both have their place in their family and school, but when Kristina is diagnosed with cancer, both are forced to find a new place within their surroundings and within themselves. Tess becomes the center of attention as everyone is trying to find out about her sister, and she becomes the strength for her entire family as things slowly fall apart. Gurtler's novel is powerful, exploring the ever-changing dynamic of a family dealing with cancer. Both sisters deal with the disease in different ways and learn much about themselves through the process. A gripping read, Gurtler allows real life to prevail, avoiding the all-too-easy, "after-school special" ending many writers might have chosen. Major characters are well-developed, and even adults are portrayed in a realistic, although not always positive, light. Tess's parents are absent once Kristina is diagnosed, both coping with their shock and grief in their own ways. Some of the teachers refuse to show any grace even though Tess is fighting hard to keep both herself and her family intact. New friendships form and there are hints at romance, but the focus is on Tess and the strength she finds within herself to stand on her own, protect her sister, and hold her family together. Review from Blkosiner's Book Blog

This was a really powerful and emotional story, about love, family and discovering who you are.
I'm not her addresses popularity and letting who you are shine. Tess breaks my heart, and I'm able to relate with how she feels and what she battles with. It's hard watching her learn about her friend, who her sister is to her, and discovering new things about what she once mocked.
It's really eye-opening to see how cancer really effects the community and to see how even little things can make an impact.
The family dynamics are well written and very believable. It's hard to read, but at the same time, I can see pieces of my family, my behaviors in each and it's hard to look down at all when you know where they are coming from.
If you like emotional reads, contemporary, then I'd definitely recommend giving this a read.

    I'm not her

Imagine you are 15 years old. You are in high school and this is supposed to be the time of your life. The only thing that you should be worried about is if you are going to past the test next week in English. And then the unthinkable happens. Your older sister is diagnosed with cancer. What would you do? How would you deal with this type of news? Well that is what happened to Tess.

She had everything that she could dream of. The world's greatest friend, an awesome family, and a sister that is somewhat cool. And then it all comes crumbling down. I am closer to my sisters now then I have even been. I don't know what I would do if I was ever put into this situation. My sisters mean the world to me, and I never want anything bad to happen to them!:)

Tess's sister was the most popular girl in school. Everyone loved her and wanted to be like her and now things will never be the same. But Tess needs to be strong because she is the only one in her family that is capable of doing that right now. Her mom is in denial and her dad is never around. She has to be there for her sister. The same way I would be for mine. I don't know how she is able to hold it together. She is only 15!!! I know what your are saying....she is just a character in a book?!?!?! Not for me. This book was amazing and I felt like I was in the book, living the story. This book was indescribable. It was so good!

If you need an great easy read, this book is for you. I would defiantly read this book again and again. :)
