Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Certain that no one will bother them, Baby Owl takes his toy Owly for a stroll in the moonlight. He encounters a series of concerned creatures, all warning him not to be afraid, although it is late and dark. To each, Baby Owl indignantly replies, "I'm NOT scared," noting in ever-increasing type that owls are just fine at night in the dark. When Papa turns up, Baby Owl insists that it's only Owly who is scared. But Papa gives both Owly and Baby Owl the loving comfort they need before they are finally tucked into bed. Black felt-pen lines pick up facial features and bits of landscape, but the major impression is made by boldly applied translucent paints in the expected animal colors, brown for bear, gray for badger, tan and white for the owls. The multiple images of Baby Owl on the dark end-papers display how emotions like anxiety can be expressed in the simplest of ways. The very young will get the reassuring message even without the words.

PreS-K
In this follow-up to "I'm Not Cute!" (Hyperion, 2006), Baby Owl takes his toy, Owly, for a nighttime stroll through the woods. Badger pops up unexpectedly, tells him not be frightened, and asks him why he's out past his bedtime. Indignant, Baby Owl replies, "I'm NOT scared!" and points out that "owls stay up all night!" After enduring similar encounters with Bear and Bat, the frustrated youngster meets his father and tells him that it's really Owly who is afraid. Papa calms him down, takes him home, and tucks him into bed, whispering, "It's okay to be a little bit scared of the dark," a message that a reassured Baby Owl passes on to Owly. The cartoon illustrations are painted in dusky hues with black outlines, and the glossy quality of the light-infused colors makes the art look like animation cels. The focus is on the animal characters, with just enough background detail to suggest the setting. Baby Owl has lots of personality, and despite his bravado, his large, circle-shaped eyes betray his true state of mind. The expressive visuals, brief text, and protagonist's believably childlike behavior are just right for young audiences.

Kirkus Reviews
Baby Owl-accompanied only by his trusty toy owl, Owly-is out at night, sans parents, for the first time, and if he feels a bit frightened, he certainly isn't going to admit it. As Baby Owl meets an array of woodland animals-Badger, Bear, Bat and finally Papa Owl-each tells him not to be scared. "I'm NOT scared!" Baby Owl replies with a wide-eyed look. "It's Owly who's scared," he finally tells Papa. Papa is happy to soothe Owly and Baby Owl as well. As the sun comes up, he reads Baby Owl a book, tucks in the two intrepid adventurers and reminds Baby Owl that it's okay to be afraid of the dark. "Papa means you, Owly," Baby Owl says, keeping up a brave front and drifting off to sleep. Young children will find comfort and a chuckle in this simple, quiet story, and the charming pictures perfectly depict Baby Owl's sense of independence and bravado. A nice choice for youngsters just starting to explore the outside world. (Picture book. 2-4)

I'm Not Scared...I refuse to be!

I love this book. The little owl is so brave, and has lots of animals who watch over him and help him find his way through the woods at night.

    I'm Not Scared

I purchased this for my four year old Granddaughter who was scared of the dark, scared of bugs, and just plain scared. Now she carries this book around with her proclaiming she is no longer scared! She's still working on issues with the bugs. I would reccomend this for any little one who has some scarey issues.

    Funny and amusing

Yes, it's what owls do. Never read the first one but this sort of helped get my son talking about what might scare him. It's a good short book for bedtime reading.

Wonderful Book to Read to Young Children

My very active 2.5 year old grandson loves to hear stories read out loud. After two readings of "I'm Not Scared!" he was able to fill-in-the-missing-words when I would stop and patiently wait for him to remember. Now he reads the book to me!! Well, not actually reads it, but he sure does know the story and because of the wonderful illustrations, he can tell right where we are now and what comes next. Love this book!
