I'm Not So Tough

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David McGee
Anyone wondering whether Mindy McCready could ever top her startling double-platinum debut, TEN THOUSAND ANGELS, need look no further than I'M NOT SO TOUGH. On a collection of songs penned by familiar Nashville writers Matraca Berg, Marshall Chapman, Al Anderson, Gary Burr, et al. and by promising newer tunesmiths, McCready shows off a more mature vocal style that serves to heighten the impact of sensitive numbers and up-tempo house-shakers alike. On the quiet meditations, McCready sounds like she's picked up some tricks from the classic pop singers of yore. The album strikes a nice balance between quiet and stormy moments, and McCready delivers from first cut to last. ...

The album strikes a nice balance between quiet and stormy moments, and McCready delivers from first cut to last. I'M NOT SO TOUGH is definitively pristine country-pop, sung with commitment, played with assurance, and produced to be radio-friendly. The mainstream always should be so fortunate.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Taking a bit of a cue from Faith Hill and Shania Twain, Mindy McCready shoots for the crossover adult contemporary audience with her third album, I'm Not So Tough. She doesn't take things quite as far as either Faith or Shania, retaining a distinct country twang to the music if not the voice throughout the album, but it's clear that the album has a smoother, brighter sheen, all the better for pop radio, plus ballads and mid-tempo pop cuts that are designed for wider plays. This may dismay some longtime fans, but McCready pulls it off because she sings with conviction and she has true charisma. That said, the music itself isn't as appealing as that on her first two albums and the material is a bit more uneven, but it is often entertaining and is ultimately at least a musically successful bid at a crossover adult pop record.
